MOM Brands Company was an American company that made breakfast cereals. It used to be called Malt-O-Meal Company and Campbell Cereal Company. Its main office was in Northfield, Minnesota.

MOM Brands sold its cereals in many grocery stores across the United States. In 2012, its sales were about US$750 million. The company had four factories in different states and also several distribution centers.

MOM Brands made both hot and cold cereals. By 2012, cold cereals made up over 75% of its total sales. Many of its cold cereals were similar to those made by other big companies like Kellogg's, Quaker Oats Company, and General Mills.

Even with strong competition, Malt-O-Meal grew a lot between 2001 and 2012. It more than tripled its share of the cereal market. This made it the fastest-growing cereal company in America at that time.

In 2015, another company called Post Holdings bought MOM Brands. After the purchase, Post Holdings moved its cereal main office to the MOM Brands offices in Lakeville, Minnesota. The combined business was then renamed Post Consumer Brands.

History of MOM Brands

Malt-O-Meal with coffee
Malt-O-Meal, a hot cereal, was the company's first product.

The company started in 1919 as the Campbell Cereal Company. It was founded by John Campbell, who was a miller in Owatonna, Minnesota. He created a hot breakfast cereal called Malt-O-Meal. It was a mix of farina wheat and malted barley. Campbell wanted his cereal to compete with another popular cereal called Cream of Wheat.

In 1927, the company moved its cereal production to the Ames Mill in Northfield, Minnesota. Nine years later, the main office moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1953, the company changed its name to the Malt-O-Meal Company.

The company tried to sell other cereals in the past. In the 1940s, they tried Campbell's Corn Flakes. In the 1960s, they tried State Fair brand Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice. However, these products didn't do well against other companies, so they stopped making them.

In 1998, Malt-O-Meal began building a large cereal factory in Tremonton, Utah. But in 2001, construction stopped because the company's sales and profits went down. They even had to lay off some workers. The building was put up for sale.

However, in 2002, Malt-O-Meal's sales and profits started to improve a lot. Because of this, they decided not to sell the factory. Construction started again, and the Tremonton plant began making cereals in 2004.

In 2002, Malt-O-Meal bought the bagged cereal business from the Quaker Oats Company. This helped them expand their product line.

In 2007, Malt-O-Meal took part in a special marketing campaign for The Simpsons Movie. They packaged one of their cereals, Tootie Frooties, as "Krusty-O's". This special cereal was sold in 7-Eleven stores across America.

Also in 2007, Malt-O-Meal started building a new factory in Asheboro, North Carolina. This became the company's fourth manufacturing plant. It began operations in late 2008.

In December 2009, Malt-O-Meal bought the Farina brand of hot cereal from U.S. Mills. The Farina brand was originally started by Pillsbury in 1898.

On February 21, 2012, the Malt-O-Meal Company changed its name again to MOM Brands. The new name was chosen to show that the company made more than just Malt-O-Meal cereal. It also kept the "MOM" part to remember its main product. At the same time, the company announced it had become the third-largest cereal producer in the United States, passing Post.

MOM Brands bought the CoCo Wheats brand in June 2012. In 2013, MOM Brands launched Mom's Best Naturals cereal. This new brand helped them gain more space on store shelves and contributed to their success.

On January 27, 2015, Post Holdings announced it would buy MOM Brands. The sale was completed on May 4, 2015. Production of cold cereal continued at the Northfield plant. As of 2024, Post still sells the Malt-O-Meal brand.
