MacDougall Hospital was an important military hospital. It was run by the U.S. Army and located at Fort Schuyler in New York City. This hospital played a big role just before and during the American Civil War.
A Busy Military Hospital
MacDougall Hospital first opened its doors in October 1862. It was a very busy place, helping many soldiers. The hospital temporarily closed in February 1864. During this first period, it treated 4,505 patients.
The hospital reopened in May 1864. It continued to care for soldiers until it permanently closed in September 1865. In this second period, it helped even more people, with 7,587 patients.
Helping Soldiers During Wartime
MacDougall Hospital was quite large for its time. It could hold up to 2,000 patients at once. In October 1863, it was considered one of the oldest U.S. military hospitals.
By the fall of 1864, the hospital was very full. It was caring for about 1,600 patients. When the hospital finally closed in September 1865, it had treated a total of 12,092 patients.
Sadly, during the Civil War, about 16% of the patients at MacDougall Hospital either left without permission or did not return after a break.
