About Machalí
Machalí is an important place in Chile. It covers a large area of land. Many people live here, both in the city and in the countryside.
People and Population
Every few years, a count of people is done. This is called a census. The 2002 census showed that Machalí had 28,628 people. Almost all of these people (about 94%) lived in the city areas. A smaller number (about 6%) lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Machalí grew by 18.5%.
How Machalí is Governed
Machalí is a commune. This means it has its own local government. A group of people called a municipal council helps run the commune. The main leader of the commune is called an alcalde. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, José Miguel Urrutia was the alcalde.
Machalí is also part of larger electoral areas. These areas help decide who represents the people in the national government.
National Representatives
People from Machalí help choose members for the Chamber of Deputies. This is one part of Chile's national law-making body. For example, Eugenio Bauer and Ricardo Rincón represented this area. They worked with other towns like Mostazal and Rengo.
Machalí also helps choose members for the Senate. This is the other part of Chile's national law-making body. Andrés Chadwick Piñera and Juan Pablo Letelier Morel represented the O'Higgins Region in the Senate.
