Machelen is a town in Belgium. It is a municipality located in the province of Flemish Brabant. This area is part of the Flemish region.
The municipality of Machelen includes two main towns: Diegem and Machelen itself. As of January 1, 2006, about 12,500 people lived here. The total area of Machelen is about 11.59 square kilometers. This means there were about 1,078 people living in each square kilometer.
The official language spoken in Machelen is Dutch. This is the main language used throughout the Flanders region. Machelen is also a close neighbor to Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. It directly borders the Brussels-Capital Region, right next to the Haren area.
A part of Brussels Airport is located in Diegem. This airport area is shared with the nearby town of Zaventem. Machelen is also important for travel because it has three major road connections. These include the Brussels Ring road (R0) and the A201 motorway, which goes to the airport. The A1 motorway, which leads to Mechelen and Antwerp, also starts here.
The Buda railway station serves some parts of Machelen. However, only the Service S1 stops at this station. Other train routes usually use the Vilvoorde railway station further north.
Local Economy and Businesses

Machelen is home to some important companies. Brussels Airlines has its main office in Diegem, which is part of Machelen. Their headquarters are located in a building called b.house, right on the grounds of Brussels Airport.
Brussels Airlines was created in 2006. This happened when two airlines, SN Brussels and Virgin Express, joined together. Another major company, Chevron Phillips, also has offices in Diegem. Their operations for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are based in the Stockholm Building.
