Early Life and Education

Madge Oliver was born in a town called Knaresborough in Yorkshire, England. She loved art and went to study at the famous Slade School of Art in London. She attended this school from 1894 to 1897.

In 1896, Madge Oliver showed great promise. She won a special scholarship from the Slade School. Another famous artist, Augustus John, also won a scholarship that same year.

Moving to France and Wartime Service

In 1910, Madge Oliver decided to move to France. She made her home in a beautiful place called Cassis. This town is located near Marseille, a large city in southern France.

During World War One, Madge Oliver helped out. She was honored for her service during the war.

Her Art and Exhibitions

Madge Oliver mostly painted interiors, which are scenes inside buildings. But she also painted people and many beautiful landscapes of France. Her art showed the places where she lived and traveled.

In 1924, she had her own art show in Paris. This solo exhibition was held at the Druet Gallery. It was a big moment for her art career.

Legacy and Recognition

Sadly, Madge Oliver passed away on the island of Corsica. After her death, a special exhibition was held to remember her work. This memorial show took place in London at the Leger Galleries in June and July 1935.

A well-known artist named Ethel Walker wrote the introduction for the exhibition's catalog. The Tate art museum later bought two of Madge Oliver's paintings. Both of these paintings show views from her art studio in Cassis.
