Magaly Medina's Career Journey
Magaly Medina worked as a journalist for over six years at a political magazine called Oiga. Her first time on television was in April 1991. She appeared on a debate show called "Fuego Cruzado". Later, Magaly Medina shifted from reporting on politics and crime to entertainment news. She had a small part in "El Noticiero", a news program on ATV. This segment was called "Pese a Quien le Pese". It became the starting point for her famous celebrity show, Magaly TeVe. This show changed how people in Peru got their celebrity news.
Magaly TeVe first aired on November 1, 1997, on ATV. During its most popular times, the show had very high ratings. It reached its highest point in January 2009. After a period away from the screen, the show returned with an average of 39.1 rating points. It even had peaks of 56.4 in some audience groups.

After taking a two-year break, Magaly Medina returned to television. She even appeared as a guest judge on an episode of "Peru's Next Top Model" during her break. Her new show, simply titled "Magaly", started on September 13, 2014, on Latina. A year later, she also produced a special program called "En Carne Propia, Anorexia y Bulimia". This show on Latina discussed eating disorders through personal stories and research.
In December 2016, it was announced that Magaly Medina would go back to her journalism roots. She began hosting "90 Matinal", a morning news segment on Latina, in March 2017.
Understanding Magaly TV Terms
Magaly Medina's show, Magaly TV, la firme, used many unique words. These terms became very popular in Peru.
What is Chollywood?
"Chollywood" is a mix of the words "Cholo" and "Hollywood." It is a term widely used in Peru. It describes the local entertainment world. This includes actors, musicians, comedians, TV hosts, soccer players, and reality TV stars. It is not to be confused with a similar term used for Chinese film productions.
Who is La Urraca?
"La Urraca" means "The magpie." A magpie was the symbol of Magaly Medina's program from the very beginning.
What is Ampay?
"Ampay" is a word from the Quechua language. It is used when someone is caught doing something secretly. Children in Peru also use this word when playing Hide & Seek. The person who finds someone yells "Ampay!" and the name of the person found.
A big reason for the success of Magaly Medina's show was the famous "ampays." These were often secret photos or videos taken by her team. They would catch celebrities doing things like cheating on their partners or sportsmen drinking in public.
Who are Chacales?
"Chacales" means "Jackals." This was the name for the team of journalists or paparazzi who worked for Magaly Medina. They were responsible for getting the footage and creating the segments for her show.
What is a Figuretti?
"Figuretti" is a term for a celebrity who appears in many news stories. They seem to be seeking attention from cameras for no clear reason.
What is a Jugador or Jugadorazo?
"Jugador" or "Jugadorazo" is a term used for men, especially soccer players. It describes those who were romantically linked to many different women. It is similar to saying someone is a "Lady's Man" or a "Player."
What is a Bataclana?
The word "bataclana" came to Latin America in 1922. It arrived with a Parisian theater company called Bataclan. During their shows, female performers wore little clothing and were seen as living freely. These performers were sometimes called "bataclanas" in a negative way.
Magaly Medina made this term popular in Peruvian culture. She used it to refer to local showgirls, also known as "vedettes." However, the meaning of "vedette" in Latin America is different from France, where it means actresses.
What is a Calabacita?
The term "Calabacita" comes from the Spanish version of the TV show "Married with Children." In the show, the character Al Bundy called his daughter, Kelly, "pumpkin." "Calabacita" is a direct translation of "little pumpkin." It was used to describe pretty women who were thought to lack intelligence, much like the character Kelly Bundy.
