Magnús Scheving's Early Life

Magnús Scheving was born in Borgarnes, a small town in Iceland, on November 10, 1964. When he was 15, he started his first job. He worked as a messenger for the telephone company in Borgarnes.

Magnús learned about building and carpentry. This knowledge helped him to build his own house later on. He said he "physically...[laid] every brick and roof tile" himself.

In his twenties, Magnús made a fun bet with a friend. His friend, Fjölnir Þorgeirsson, was a woodworker. They each picked a sport the other knew nothing about. They had three years to become good at it. Magnús chose snooker for Fjölnir. Fjölnir chose aerobics for Magnús. In the end, Magnús became a national champion in aerobics. Fjölnir became a national champion in snooker!

Creating LazyTown

Sportacus

In the 1990s, Magnús noticed something important. There weren't many good role models for kids about healthy living. He realized that children needed fun ways to learn about eating well and exercising. He wanted to create a character who would inspire kids to be active.

So, in 1995, he published his book Áfram Latibær. This book was about a sports elf who helped people in a town learn to be healthy. The book became a stage play in Iceland. It was very popular with children. A second play was made, which introduced the character Robbie Rotten.

The LazyTown TV show was later made for Nickelodeon. The first episode aired on August 16, 2004. Magnús is the creator and co-founder of LazyTown Entertainment. This company makes books, videos, and games. All of these help teach children about fitness and healthy living. In the show, Magnús played Sportacus, the super-active hero. He played this role from 2004 to 2014.

In 2006, Magnús received a special award. It was a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Icelandic Edda Awards. The President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, gave him the award. This was for his work on the LazyTown series.

In 2011, Turner Broadcasting bought LazyTown Entertainment. Magnús continued to play Sportacus for a few more years. In 2014, he announced he would stop playing Sportacus. He also stepped down as the CEO of LazyTown Entertainment. Another actor, Dýri Kristjánsson, took over the role of Sportacus in live shows.

On May 16, 2024, it was announced that Magnús Scheving bought back the company. He now owns the rights to the LazyTown brand again. This was a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
