The magpie goose (Anseranas semipalmata) is a special type of bird. It is the only living species in its unique family, called Anseranatidae. You can find these geese living in northern Australia and southern New Guinea.
What Magpie Geese Look Like
Magpie geese are easy to spot because of their striking black and white plumage. They also have yellowish legs. Their feet are only partly webbed, which is different from many other water birds. This means the skin between their toes does not go all the way to the end.
These birds mostly eat plants. They find their food both in the water and on land. If you see a group of magpie geese, you might notice that the males are usually larger than the females.
