Mahmoud Fahmy El Nokrashy Pasha (born April 26, 1888 – died December 28, 1948) was an important Egyptian political leader. He served as the Prime Minister of Egypt two times. This was during the time when Egypt was a kingdom.
Early Life and Education
Nokrashy Pasha was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on April 26, 1888. He came from a middle-class family. His father was an accountant from Egypt. His mother, Hanifa, had a Turkish background. Nokrashy Pasha finished his high school studies at Ras Al Tin.
Political Career Highlights
Nokrashy Pasha was a member of the Saadist Institutional Party (SIP). This party supported a government led by a king. He was also part of a secret group within the Wafd Party. The Wafd Party was a major nationalist party in Egypt at that time.
Nokrashy Pasha became the prime minister of Egypt twice. His first time as prime minister was from 1945 to 1946. His second term lasted from 1946 to 1948. His second government was a coalition government. This means it included members from different political parties. These parties were the Saadist Institutional Party and the Liberal Constitutional Party.
In 1948, Nokrashy Pasha became worried about the Muslim Brotherhood. This group was becoming very strong and popular. There were rumors that the Brotherhood planned to take over the government. The Brotherhood was also linked to the death of the prime minister before him. Because of these concerns, Nokrashy Pasha made the Brotherhood an illegal group in December 1948. The government took control of their money and property. Many members of the Brotherhood were sent to prison.
Tragic End
On December 28, 1948, Nokrashy Pasha was tragically killed. He was killed by a member of the Brotherhood.
