Maidan Shar (also spelled Maidan Shahr or simply Maidan) is a city in central Afghanistan. It is the capital of Maidan Wardak province. In 2003, about 35,008 people lived there. Most of them are Pashtuns.
On August 15, 2021, the city was taken over by Taliban fighters. This made it the twenty-seventh provincial capital to be captured by the Taliban during their advance in 2021.

Maidan Shar is home to about 14,265 people. The city is divided into 4 areas called districts. It covers a total land area of 3,347 hectares. There are 1,585 homes in Maidan Shar.
Zarifa Ghafari became the mayor of Maidan Shar in 2019. She was one of the few women mayors in Afghanistan. At 26 years old, she was also the youngest person to be appointed to this role. She has received awards for her work to support women's rights in Afghanistan.

Maidan Shar is like an urban village. It is located about 40 kilometers west of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
Land Use
Most of the land in Maidan Shar is not used for buildings or farming. Empty land and vacant plots make up 81% of the total land. Buildings for public services, like schools or government offices, are the next largest type of land use. These take up 22% of the developed land. Most homes are found in Districts 1 and 2 of the city.
Geographical Features
Maidan Shar is in the northeastern part of Wardak Province. It is surrounded by mountains. These include the Arghandeh and Paghman mountains from Kabul Province. It is also near the Jalrez and Nirkh districts within Wardak Province.
The total area of Maidan Shar is 345 square kilometers. It sits high above sea level, at an elevation of 2,225 meters. The district has 59 main villages and one smaller sub-village.

Most people in Maidan Shar work in agriculture, raising animals, gardening, and trading goods. Overall, the people of Maidan Shar do not have a lot of money.
Education System
By the end of 2008, there were 14 schools in Maidan Shar. These schools served about 9,268 students. Around 275 teachers worked in these schools.
