Mainstay Lake is a beautiful lake in Guyana, a country in South America. It is located in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region, not far from the Atlantic coast. The lake is famous for its lovely 0.5 mi (0.80 km) stretch of white sand beach. It's a great place for visitors to relax and have fun.

Fun at Mainstay Lake

Mainstay Lake is home to a popular resort. This resort is a fun place for people to visit. You can reach it by driving about seven miles from Anna Regina. Or, you can take a quick twenty-minute flight from Georgetown right to the resort's own airstrip!

The Mainstay Lake Resort holds exciting events every year. One big event is an annual regatta. A regatta is a series of boat races. They also have a regular Easter Car and Bike Show. It's a lively place with lots to see and do.

For a few months in 2020, the resort had to close. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But it has since reopened for visitors.

Pineapple Processing

In 2002, a factory was built near Mainstay Lake. This factory was made to process pineapples. It was a project by the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and Amazon Caribbean Ltd (AMCAR). However, fewer pineapples were being grown in the area. Because of this, AMCAR closed the factory in 2014. There were talks in 2019 about possibly opening it again.

Whyaka Village: The Local Community

The area around Mainstay Lake is also home to a community called Whyaka. This is an Amerindian village. Most of the people living here are from the Arawak tribe. The Arawaks were the first people to live in this area. They called it ‘Quacabuka’, which means ‘in-between’.

Whyaka village covers about thirteen square miles. It has a population of 576 people. The community has many important places for its residents. These include a primary school and a nursery school. There is also a health centre, a community centre, and a ballfield for sports. The village even has a chicken farm and a heritage park. For secondary school, students usually go to Anna Regina or Cotton Field.
