Maisie Williams's Early Life and School
Maisie Williams was born in Bristol, England, on April 15, 1997. Her parents divorced when she was very young. She was raised by her mother and stepfather in a village called Clutton, Somerset. Maisie is the youngest of four children. She was nicknamed "Maisie" when she was little because she looked like a cartoon character from a comic strip called The Perishers.
Maisie went to Clutton Primary School and Norton Hill School. Later, she went to Bath Dance College to study performing arts. She learned many types of dance, like musical theatre, ballet, and tap. She dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. Maisie left school at 14 because her acting career started to take off. She was then taught at home and did not take her GCSE exams.
Maisie Williams's Acting Journey
Starting Out: Game of Thrones (2011–2019)
When Maisie was 12, she began her acting career in a huge TV show called Game of Thrones. She played Arya Stark, a brave and feisty young girl from a noble family. The show was based on the fantasy books by George R. R. Martin. Maisie almost missed her audition for the role because it was on the same day as a school trip to a farm! Luckily, her mom convinced her to go. As Game of Thrones became super popular around the world, Maisie became famous too.

Arya Stark became a fan favorite. She was a strong character who went through many challenges, including loss and seeking revenge. The role needed a young actress who could play a skilled fighter. Maisie is naturally right-handed, but she learned to act left-handed for the show to match her character. She did most of her own stunts and fight scenes. She was even told a year before filming "The Long Night" to build up her strength for the long battle scene. Her performance in that episode was nominated for an award. Maisie appeared in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, which ended in May 2019.
Maisie has said that she is proud of her role as Arya, but she doesn't miss that time in her life. Arya was younger than Maisie and had to look boyish with short hair and makeup. This look didn't match how Maisie was growing up or what she thought was beautiful.
Continuing Her Acting Career
2012–2015: The Falling, Cyberbully, and Doctor Who
In 2012, Maisie played Loren Caleigh in the BBC thriller series The Secret of Crickley Hall. She also appeared in a short comedy video called The Olympic Ticket Scalper. She was in the movie Heatstroke (2012) and the short film Up on the Roof (2013).
In 2014, Maisie starred as Lydia in the British movie The Falling. This film was about growing up and was set in an all-girls school. Maisie won several awards for this role, including the London Film Critics' Circle Award for Young Performer of the Year. Critics praised her performance, calling her "amazingly talented." In 2014, she also played Abbie in the Irish comedy-drama film Gold.
In 2015, Maisie starred as Casey Jacobs in Cyberbully, a TV film for Channel 4. Maisie herself had experienced cyberbullying, so this role was important to her. Her performance was described as very powerful. In the same year, Maisie was a guest star in four episodes of Doctor Who. She played Ashildr, a Viking girl who becomes immortal. Her acting in Doctor Who was also highly praised.
2017–2019: iBoy, Early Man, I and You, and gen:LOCK
In 2017, Maisie starred as Lucy in the Netflix sci-fi thriller movie iBoy. Critics said she brought "depth, humor, and honesty" to her role. Also in 2017, she appeared as Isabel Baxter in Mary Shelley, a romantic historical drama.
In 2018, Maisie voiced the character Goona in the animated comedy film Early Man. Goona was a brave, rebellious tomboy who loved football in the Stone Age. From October to November 2018, Maisie starred in the play I and You in London. Her performance on stage was a big success. She also appeared in the short film Corvidae, a dark fairy tale.
In 2019, Maisie starred with Asa Butterfield in the romantic comedy-drama Then Came You. She played a teenager with a serious illness. Critics felt Maisie made her character very likable and vulnerable. From 2019 to 2021, Maisie voiced Cammie MacCloud, a mischievous Scottish hacker, in the animated web series Gen:Lock. This show is set in a future world where things have gone wrong.
2020: The New Mutants, Two Weeks to Live, and The Owners
In August 2020, Maisie co-starred in the superhero horror film The New Mutants. She played Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, a Scottish mutant who can turn into a wolf. Critics said she played the role with "sincere emotion." Even though the movie got mixed reviews, her acting was considered good.
In September 2020, Maisie was the main character in Two Weeks to Live, a six-part dark comedy-drama. She played Kim Noakes, a character who is both clumsy and determined. The show allowed Maisie to show off her comedy skills, as well as her stunt fighting.
Also in September 2020, Maisie starred in the psychological thriller The Owners. She played Mary, a young woman who gets involved in a robbery that goes wrong. Critics felt Maisie used her natural charm to make her character easy to root for. Her co-star, Sylvester McCoy, predicted that Maisie would have a successful future beyond acting, possibly even becoming a director or producer.
2022: Pistol
In 2022, Maisie played the real-life punk rock icon Jordan (Pamela Rooke) in the six-episode series Pistol. This show was about the Sex Pistols band. Jordan was known for her unique style, including clothes designed by Vivienne Westwood and wild makeup. Maisie brought her strong screen presence to the role, playing Jordan as "untouchably cool." Jordan herself advised Maisie on the show, telling her she was playing a very strong woman who wanted to be "a walking work of art."
2024: The New Look
In May 2022, it was announced that Maisie would be in the Apple TV+ drama series The New Look. This show is set in Paris during World War II. Maisie plays Catherine Dior, the younger sister of famous fashion designer Christian Dior. Catherine was a hero of the French resistance and received the Legion of Honour award. The series was released in February 2024, and a second season has already been ordered.
Future Roles
In November 2024, George R. R. Martin hinted that he might be working on a new project with Maisie.
Other Activities and Interests
Working with Brands
In 2015, Maisie gave a speech in New York for Always' "Like a girl" campaign. She spoke about being a strong girl and inspired young people. In 2020, she sang "Let It Go" from Frozen in an Audi car commercial during the Super Bowl. She also appeared in an Apple MacBook ad celebrating UK creators. In summer 2020, she became an ambassador for Cartier's new watch.
In April 2021, H&M announced Maisie as its global ambassador for sustainability. This meant she would help promote H&M's goal to use more recycled clothes and create less waste. However, some activists criticized H&M and Maisie, saying it was "greenwashing" – making a company seem more eco-friendly than it really is. They argued that H&M's efforts weren't enough and that the company had issues with worker treatment. Maisie was criticized for being part of this partnership.
Starting Production Companies
Maisie started Daisy Chain Productions in 2016 with Dom Santry and Bill Milner. They met while working on the movie iBoy. Their company aims to create short films, movies, and TV shows in the UK. They want to help young people and new talent in the film industry. Their first project was a short film called Stealing Silver, which Maisie helped produce and starred in.
Maisie and Lowri Roberts also have a production company called Rapt. They are executive producers for an animated short film called Salvation Has No Name. This film is a folktale that talks about xenophobia (dislike of people from other countries) and faith through a story about circus clowns.
Creating Social Media Apps
Maisie and Dom Santry launched a new social media app called Daisie in August 2018. Daisie is a platform for artists and creators of all kinds. It helps them show their work, find projects, and work together. It's meant to be a different way for people to start their careers in creative fields. The company is based in London. By May 2019, Daisie had reached 100,000 users.
On Daisie, users can look for creative projects and connect with others in their field. Your profile grows by working with people on projects, not by getting lots of followers or likes. Maisie explained that the goal is for artists to work together, share their projects, and help each other's careers. Daisie focuses on individual creators, not companies. Maisie said that artists can let their art speak for itself instead of trying to fit someone else's idea of what they should be.
In 2019, Maisie gave a TEDx talk in Manchester. Her talk was titled "Don't strive to be famous, strive to be talented." She ended her talk by introducing Daisie as a tool for artists to work together and take control of their careers.
Maisie is also an advisor for a platform called Contact, which launched in October 2020. This platform was co-founded by Maisie's partner, Reuben Selby. Contact helps agencies and fashion models connect directly, and it plans to expand to other creative areas like photographers and stylists. It offers a new way to work in creative industries without always needing an agency.
In 2021, Maisie started a podcast called Frank Film Club with filmmaker Lowri Roberts and casting director Hannah Marie Williams. In each episode, they discuss and review a film they've watched.
Maisie Williams's Personal Life and Interests
Personal Style and Fashion
Maisie once said, "No dress in the world is worth giving up sword fighting." However, she has developed a unique and youthful fashion style. As a celebrity, she is often invited to fashion events. In 2019, Maisie and her then-boyfriend Reuben Selby (they broke up in February 2023) started appearing at fashion events in matching outfits. In 2020, she worked with Selby on his own sustainable fashion line, which he showed at Paris Fashion Week.
Activism and Charity Work
Maisie is a strong supporter of environmental causes. She has said that activist groups like Extinction Rebellion inspire her. Maisie is a global ambassador for Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project, which protests against dolphin hunts. She also supports campaigns against bullying and racism (like Black Lives Matter). She works with environmental groups like Greenpeace and the clean water charity WaterAid. She has encouraged young people to vote. During the coronavirus pandemic, she donated £50,000 to the Bristol Animal Rescue Centre, where she adopted her dog.
Maisie also worked with Zoe Sugg and activist Adwoa Aboah to design a special bag for WaterAid's Fempowered service. These bags are sold to help break taboos about periods and raise money to fight period poverty around the world.
In April 2021, Maisie became the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) first global ambassador for climate and nature. In November 2021, before a big climate conference called COP26, Maisie gave the opening speech at the premiere of Sir David Attenborough's TV series The Green Planet.
