Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe (born on August 11, 1964) was the First Lady of Sri Lanka. She is married to President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Maithree Wickremesinghe is a well-known academic, writer, and a professor of English. She teaches at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. She is an expert in gender and women's studies. This means she studies how gender affects people's lives and how women's roles in society have changed.
Professor Wickremesinghe helped start the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Kelaniya. She also teaches about gender and women's studies at other universities. These include the University of Colombo and the University of Sussex. For over 25 years, she has worked to make sure everyone is treated fairly, no matter their gender. She helps create plans for gender equality and trains people on these important topics.
Early Life and Education
Maithree Wickremesinghe is the only child of Senevi B. Wickremasinghe and Shiranee Wickremasinghe. She grew up in Nawala, Koswatte. For her schooling, she went to Musaeus College, which is a private girls' school in Colombo.
She studied English at King's College London and earned a special degree called a BA (Hons). Later, she completed her MA degree in women's studies at the University of Colombo. She then earned her Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Education, University of London. Her Ph.D. research focused on how to study women's issues in Sri Lanka.
In 1994, she married Ranil Wickremesinghe. In July 2022, she became the First Lady of Sri Lanka when Ranil became the President of Sri Lanka. She is the first wife of a president in Sri Lanka to have a Ph.D.
