Maiya Williams is an American author, television producer, and screenwriter. She was born on December 18, 1962.
Early Life and Education
Maiya Williams was born in Corvallis, Oregon. Her father, Carroll B. Williams Jr., was a well-known forester. Maiya grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, and Berkeley, California.
She went to Berkeley High School. Later, she graduated from Harvard College in 1984. While at Harvard, she was an editor and vice president for The Harvard Lampoon. This was a big deal because she was the first African American woman chosen for the magazine. She was also the first African American to become an officer there.
In 2024, Maiya earned a Master's degree in African American Studies from University of California, Los Angeles. She is now working towards her PhD in U.S. History.
Career Highlights
Maiya Williams has worked on many popular television shows. She has written and produced for series like Roc, Amen, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. She also worked on The Wayans Bros., MAD TV, and animated shows like Rugrats and Futurama. More recently, she was a co-executive producer for The Last O.G.
Books for Young Readers
In 2004, Maiya wrote her first book for kids, The Golden Hour. This book is an exciting time-travel adventure set during the French Revolution. The Golden Hour won the Southern California Booksellers Association Award for Best First Novel. It also received the International Reading Association Intermediate Fiction Award.
She wrote two more books that continued the time-travel series:
- The Hour of the Cobra (2006): This story takes readers to ancient Egypt.
- The Hour of the Outlaw (2007): This book is set in California during the 1800s.
In 2010, Maiya published The Fizzy Whiz Kid: The Rise and Fall of a Hollywood Nobody. This book is a modern story that teaches about the ups and downs of fame. Her most recent book, Middle School Cool, came out in 2014. It was re-released in 2016 with a new title, Kaboom Academy.
Maiya Williams also helps young writers. She works as a writing mentor at an organization called WriteGirl.
Personal Life
Maiya Williams is married to Patric M. Verrone, who is also a TV writer. They have three children together. Their children include playwright and author P.C. Verrone and documentary producer Mars Verrone. Maiya Williams lives in Pacific Palisades.
