Maja Ostaszewska (born September 3, 1972) is a famous Polish actress. She started her acting career in 1993 with a small part in the movie Schindler's List. Later, she played a main role in the film The Haven (1998). For this, she won an award for Best Actress at the Polish Film Festival.
She won her second Polish Film Festival Award for Best Actress for Prymas – trzy lata z tysiąca (2000). Maja Ostaszewska has acted in over 30 movies. She has been nominated six times for the Polish Academy Award for Best Actress. She won this award twice: for Jack Strong (2014) and Body (2015).
Ostaszewska has also starred in many other well-known films. These include Katyn (2007), In the Name Of (2013), and Never Gonna Snow Again (2020). More recently, she appeared in The In-Laws (2021) and its sequel, Broad Peak (2022), Green Border (2023), and Colors of Evil: Red (2024).
Her Life and Acting Career
Maja Ostaszewska was born in Kraków, Poland. Her father, Jacek Ostaszewski, is a Polish musician. Maja was raised following the Buddhist faith. She began learning to act in Kraków. She later graduated from the PWST in 1996.
After school, she mostly acted at the Teatr Rozmaitości in Warsaw. There, she worked with famous Polish directors like Krystian Lupa and Krzysztof Warlikowski. In 1993, while still training, she had a small role in Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List. Her first stage role in Warsaw was Rosalinde in William Shakespeare's As You Like It (1996).
In 1998, Ostaszewska played the main character in the movie The Haven. This role earned her the Best Actress Award at the Polish Film Festival. She won her second Polish Film Festival Award for Best Actress for Prymas – trzy lata z tysiąca (2000). She also received a Paszport Polityki Award for her film work.
On television, Ostaszewska starred in the drama series Removals in 2001. She was also a regular cast member in the medical drama Na dobre i na złe (2003–2008). In 2008, she appeared in the war drama Days of Honor. She was also in the comedy-drama Recipe For Life (2011–2013) and the medical drama Diagnosis (2017–2019). In 2012, she won the Telekamera Award for Best Actress. She also appeared in the TV movie The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009).
Ostaszewska acted in films like Where Eskimos Live and The Pianist in 2002. She played a main role in Andrzej Wajda's historical drama Katyń in 2007. She also starred in Janosik: A True Story (2009). She played lead roles in Uwiklanie (2011) and In the Name Of (2013). She then starred in Jack Strong (2014) and Body (2015). For these two films, she won the Polish Academy Award for Best Actress.
In 2020, Ostaszewska starred in Never Gonna Snow Again. This film was chosen to represent Poland at the Academy Awards. The next year, she starred in the crime drama series Klangor. She also appeared in the comedy film The In-Laws (2021) and the true-story drama Broad Peak (2022). In 2023, Ostaszewska starred in Green Border, directed by Agnieszka Holland. In 2024, she was in the mystery film Colors of Evil: Red for Netflix. She was also cast in the Netflix series Projekt UFO.
Her Personal Life
Maja Ostaszewska is in a relationship with Polish cinematographer Michał Englert. They have two children: a son named Franciszek (born 2007) and a daughter named Janina (born 2009). Maja Ostaszewska is a vegetarian and follows the Buddhist faith. She is also known for supporting the LGBT community.
