Make (also known as Make: or MAKE:) is an American magazine that started in February 2005. It's all about Do It Yourself (DIY) projects. This means you learn to build things yourself or with others.
The magazine features projects using computers, electronics, metalworking, robotics, and woodworking. Many projects can be made with simple, cheap materials. Make is a very important part of the "maker movement". This movement celebrates people who love to create and build.
In June 2019, the company that published Make magazine faced some challenges. It had to reorganize. Since then, Make has continued to publish new issues every three months. Make Community LLC now publishes the magazine.

Magazine History and Focus
The first issue of Make magazine came out in February 2005. It was first published four times a year. These months were February, May, August, and November. By Fall 2023, more than 86 issues had been released. You can also read the magazine online.
The magazine has articles and regular sections. But the main focus is on step-by-step projects. Each issue also has a "Toolbox" section. This part reviews new books and tools for makers. Many issues have a special theme. The articles in that section are usually about the theme. Famous writers like Cory Doctorow have written for Make. The cartoonist Roy Doty also drew for many issues.
A popular part of the magazine was the Skill Builder section. This section taught readers new skills. These skills included welding, electronics, and moldmaking.
Dale Dougherty, who helped start O'Reilly Media, founded Make magazine. He was the publisher along with Sherry Huss. The first editor-in-chief was Mark Frauenfelder. Keith Hammond is the current editor-in-chief.
In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a German version of Make was published. This version was made by Heise Zeitschriften Verlag. It was separate from the English magazine.
What is Maker Faire?
The magazine also started a big public event called Maker Faire. This event celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, and science projects. It's a place for people who love the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. The very first Maker Faire was held on April 22-23, 2006. It took place at the San Mateo Fairgrounds.
The first event had many areas for exhibits and workshops. There was also a large outdoor area. Over 100 makers showed off their creations. Visitors could join hands-on workshops and watch demonstrations. There were also DIY competitions.
Maker Faires grew quickly. In 2007, they were held in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, Texas. By 2013, there were 100 Maker Faires around the world. These included events in China, Japan, and many cities in the United States. Most of these were "Mini" Maker Faires. These are smaller, local events organized by communities.
In 2014, the number of Faires kept growing. Even the White House hosted a Maker Faire that year. By 2017, more than 240 Maker Faires were planned globally.
Makers Book
Makers is a hardback book that came from the magazine. Its full title is "All Kinds of People Making Amazing Things in Backyards, Garages, and Basements." The book is based on a section from the magazine. It shows different DIY projects and tells the stories of the people who made them.
Craft Magazine
In October 2006, a new magazine called Craft was created. It was a spin-off from Make. Craft focused on art and craft activities. This allowed Make to focus only on technology and DIY projects.
However, in February 2009, the print version of Craft was stopped. This was because of rising costs. But Craft continued to exist online. All its future printed content was then included in Make magazine.
Make Television Show
Make television was a TV show that started in January 2009. It was produced by Twin Cities Public Television. The show was hosted by John Edgar Park and shown on PBS stations. Ten episodes were made. They featured different projects and how-to guides. The show also included videos sent in by viewers online.
Make Controller Kit
The MAKE Controller Kit was an open-source hardware tool. It was designed for hobbyists and professionals. They could use it to create interactive projects. The kit worked with many computer programs. These included Max/MSP, Flash, Processing, Java, Python, and Ruby. It could connect to anything that used OSC.
Makezine helped develop the idea for the MAKE Controller Kit. The goal was to make using the MAKE controller easier.
One cool feature was the ability to add XBee modules. These modules allowed for wireless communication. XBee modules brought the power of IEEE 802.15.4 network standards and Zigbee protocol to the MAKE Controller.
