Mako: Island of Secrets is an exciting Australian TV show for kids and teens. It's also known around the world as Mako Mermaids. This show is a spin-off from ' and was created by Jonathan M. Shiff. It was made with Network Ten and Nickelodeon.
The series follows Zac, a teenage boy who turns into a merman. This happens after he accidentally falls into a magical pool of water on the fictional Mako Island.

Story of Mako Island
Zac, a teenage boy, decides to camp on Mako Island. He doesn't know that three mermaids, Sirena, Nixie, and Lyla, are watching him. These mermaids are the guardians of the island.
That night, under a full moon, Zac touches the magic water of the Moon Pool. The next morning, Zac finds he can control water. Later, he falls into the water and discovers he has become a merman with a fish tail!
His new merman powers cause problems for the mermaids. Their mermaid group, called a pod, casts them out. This is because they let Zac visit the island. The three mermaids are curious about living on land. They also want to remove Zac's powers. So, they go to land and learn to live among humans.
Season 2 Adventures
In the second season, the mermaids keep finding Mako's secrets. They learn more about a special merman chamber. Nixie and Lyla leave to find a new home. Sirena stays with Ondina and Mimmi. Ondina and Mimmi are new mermaids from the Mako pod. They continue trying to remove Zac's powers. They also want to get the island back for their pod.
Evie, Zac's girlfriend, faces her own challenge. She accidentally becomes a mermaid herself. The others try to help her deal with this big change.
Season 3 Challenges
In the third season, Sirena is away with Aquata. Zac, Ondina, and Mimmi are joined by Weilan. Weilan is an Eastern mermaid. She came to Mako for safety from a magical water dragon. The mermaids must find a way to defeat this dragon. They need to stop it before it destroys everything the pod has worked to save.

- Lucy Fry as Lyla (season 1): She is seen as the leader of the first three mermaids. Lyla is strong-willed and smart. At first, she only cares about taking Zac's powers. But she soon starts to care about him. She and Nixie leave to find a new home for their mermaid pod in season 2.
- Ivy Latimer as Nixie (season 1): She is one of the first three mermaids. Nixie loves adventure and often gets into trouble. She always tries to do what she thinks is right. In season 2, she and Lyla leave to find a new home for the mermaid pod.
- Amy Ruffle as Sirena (seasons 1–2): She is one of the first three mermaids. Sirena is kind and sweet. She often helps Lyla and Nixie get along when they argue.
- Chai Romruen as Zac: He becomes a merman after falling into the Moon Pool during a full moon. Zac grew up surfing and is very sporty. In season 2, he learns he was born a merman. He also finds out that Mimmi is his sister.
- Isabel Durant as Ondina (seasons 2–3): She is a mermaid who tries to remove Zac's powers. Ondina is stubborn and likes to do things her own way.
- Allie Bertram as Mimmi (seasons 2–3): She is another mermaid who works to remove Zac's powers. Mimmi is very smart and curious. She often helps Ondina when she gets into trouble. She later discovers that Zac is her long-lost brother.
- Gemma Forsyth as Evie (recurring, season 1; main, seasons 2–3): She is Zac's girlfriend. In season 1, she thinks the mermaids are stalking her and feels jealous of Zac spending time with Lyla. She later learns they are mermaids and says sorry for judging them quickly. Evie accidentally turns into a mermaid in season 2. She becomes a human again in season 3.
- Alex Cubis as Erik (season 2): He is a merman from a very old family of mermen. Erik is quiet and keeps to himself. He works as a waiter at the Ocean Cafe with Carly.
- Linda Ngo as Weilan (season 3): She is a Chinese mermaid. Weilan accidentally leads a magic water dragon to Mako Island. She is sassy and has a quick, dry sense of humor. She prefers to sleep and socialize on land because the dragon made her scared of the ocean.
Other Important Characters
- Dominic Deutscher as Cam: He is Zac's best friend. Cam quickly finds out about Zac becoming a merman. At first, Cam supports Zac and helps keep his secret. But he later becomes jealous of Zac's powers. He gets angry when Zac tries to return the trident to its chamber. Cam then tries to become a merman himself. They later become friends again, and Cam helps Zac destroy the merman chamber.
- Kerith Atkinson as Rita: She is the school principal and also a mermaid. Rita left her pod many years ago to be with a human boy she loved. He died before they could marry. She shares her knowledge and history with the mermaids. She also teaches them how to use their powers correctly.
- Rowan Hills as David: He works at the Ocean Cafe. David and Sirena become interested in each other. David learns about mermaids at the end of season 2.
- Brooke Lee as Carly: She also works at the Ocean Cafe. Carly used to like David but is now with Cam. She is also Evie's best friend. Carly later finds out about merpeople in season 2.
