Makoto Sugiyama (杉山 誠, Sugiyama Makoto, born May 17, 1960) is a former Japanese football player. He was a strong defender who played for several top clubs in Japan during his career. He is known for winning many championships with Nissan Motors, one of the most successful teams of his time.

Makoto Sugiyama's Club Career

Makoto Sugiyama was born in Fujieda, Japan, on May 17, 1960. After finishing his studies at Tokyo University of Agriculture, he started his professional football journey.

Playing for Nissan Motors

In 1983, Sugiyama joined Nissan Motors, a club in the Japan Soccer League. He quickly became a regular player for the team. Nissan Motors was very successful during his time there. They won the Emperor's Cup in both 1983 and 1985.

From 1988 to 1990, Nissan Motors had an amazing run. They won all three major titles in Japan for two years in a row. These titles included the Japan Soccer League, the JSL Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. The team also won the JSL Cup again in 1990. Sugiyama was a key part of these victories.

Moving to Kashima Antlers

In 1991, Sugiyama moved to Sumitomo Metal, which was then a Division 2 club. This club later became known as Kashima Antlers. In 1992, the Japan Soccer League was replaced by a new, professional league called the J1 League.

Kashima Antlers performed very well in the new league. In 1993, the club finished in second place in the J1 League. They also reached the final of the 1993 Emperor's Cup, finishing as runners-up.

Time with Kyoto Purple Sanga

In 1994, Sugiyama joined Kyoto Purple Sanga, a team in the Japan Football League. In 1995, even though he played less often, his team achieved great success. Kyoto Purple Sanga finished second in their league. This strong performance helped them get promoted to the J1 League. Makoto Sugiyama retired from playing football at the end of the 1996 season.

Playing for Japan's Youth Team

Makoto Sugiyama also had a chance to represent his country. In August 1979, while he was still a student at Tokyo University of Agriculture, he was chosen for the Japan U-20 national team. This team was preparing for the World Youth Championship. Although he was part of the squad, he did not play in any of the matches during the tournament.
