Makoto Sugiyama (杉山 誠, Sugiyama Makoto, born May 17, 1960) is a former Japanese football player. He was a strong defender who played for several famous clubs in Japan. These included Nissan Motors, Kashima Antlers, and Kyoto Purple Sanga. He won many championships during his career, showing great skill and teamwork on the field.

Playing for Clubs

Makoto Sugiyama was born in Fujieda, Japan, on May 17, 1960. After finishing his studies at Tokyo University of Agriculture, he started his professional football journey.

Nissan Motors (1983–1991)

In 1983, Sugiyama joined Nissan Motors, a club in the Japan Soccer League. He quickly became a regular player for the team. He helped Nissan Motors win the Emperor's Cup twice, in 1983 and 1985.

From 1988 to 1990, Nissan Motors was very successful. They won all three major titles in Japan for two years in a row. These titles were the Japan Soccer League, the JSL Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. The team also won the 1990 JSL Cup.

Kashima Antlers (1991–1993)

In 1991, Sugiyama moved to Sumitomo Metal, which later became known as Kashima Antlers. This club was in Division 2 at the time.

In 1992, the old Japan Soccer League was replaced by a new league called the J1 League. In 1993, Kashima Antlers finished second in the J1 League. They also reached the final of the 1993 Emperor's Cup.

Kyoto Purple Sanga (1994–1996)

In 1994, Sugiyama joined Kyoto Purple Sanga, which played in the Japan Football League.

In 1995, even though he played less often, his team finished second. This helped Kyoto Purple Sanga get promoted to the J1 League. Makoto Sugiyama retired from playing football at the end of the 1996 season.

Playing for the National Team

In August 1979, when Makoto Sugiyama was still a student at Tokyo University of Agriculture, he was chosen for the Japan U-20 national team. This team was going to play in the 1995 World Youth Championship. However, he did not get to play in any of the matches during the tournament.
