After leaving Júbilo Iwata in 2008, Tanaka played for Avispa Fukuoka. He retired from playing at the end of the 2011 season. He played 32 matches for the Japan national team. He was also part of the team that won the 2004 AFC Asian Cup.

Playing Career: Club Success

Makoto Tanaka was born in Shizuoka, Japan, on August 8, 1975. After finishing high school, he joined Júbilo Iwata in 1994. From 1997, he became a regular player. He played as a center back, which is a defensive position.

Tanaka was a central player during a very successful time for Júbilo Iwata. The club won many important titles. These included the J1 League in 1997, 1999, and 2002. They also won the J.League Cup in 1998 and the Emperor's Cup in 2003.

In Asia, Júbilo Iwata won the 1998–99 Asian Club Championship. They also finished second in the Asian Club Championship in 1999–2000 and 2000–01. Tanaka left Júbilo Iwata at the end of the 2008 season. He then moved to Avispa Fukuoka, a club in the J2 League.

In 2010, Avispa Fukuoka finished third in the J2 League. This helped them get promoted to the top league, the J1 League. Tanaka announced his retirement at the end of the 2011 season. He played over 500 games in his career.

Playing Career: National Team Highlights

In July 1996, Tanaka was chosen to play for the Japanese U-23 team. This team competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics. He played in all three of Japan's matches.

Japan was eliminated in the group stage, even though they won two games. One of these wins was against Brazil. This famous victory was known as the "Miracle of Miami" in Japan.

On April 25, 2004, Tanaka played his first game for the Japan national team. This match was against Hungary. At the 2004 AFC Asian Cup in China, he played in all six matches. Japan won the championship title that year.
