Malaga is a small community in Eddy County, New Mexico, United States. It is known as a census-designated place. This means the government counts its population for statistics, but it doesn't have its own local city government. It's also an unincorporated community, which means it's not officially part of a town or city.
In 2010, about 147 people lived in Malaga. By 2020, the population was 112. Malaga has its own post office with the ZIP code 88263. A major road, U.S. Route 285, passes right through the community.
Malaga was first settled in the 1890s by people who came from Switzerland. It was originally called Kirkwell. The community was later renamed Malaga after the city of Málaga in Spain. Many workers from Italy were invited to come and farm in the area. A lot of these Italian laborers decided to make Malaga their permanent home.
Location and Surroundings
Malaga is located on the Pecos Highway. It is about 18 miles southeast of a larger town called Carlsbad. The Pecos River flows just two miles east of Malaga. This river is an important natural feature in the area.
Education
Students who live in Malaga attend schools that are part of the Carlsbad Municipal School District. This school district includes Carlsbad High School, where older students go.
