Malcolm Murray became the Earl of Dunmore after his father, the 11th Earl, passed away in 1995. The title first came to Australia when his uncle, the 9th Earl, moved to Tasmania in 1942. His father inherited the title in 1982 when his uncle, who had no sons, died.
In 1998, Malcolm Murray visited his family's old home in Airth, Scotland. He planted a special memorial tree there, near a famous building called the Dunmore Pineapple.

Malcolm Murray studied at Launceston College, Tasmania. After college, he worked as an Electrical Technical Officer for Airservices Australia. He also worked as an aerodrome technician in Devonport, Tasmania.
In 1998, he gave one speech in the House of Lords in the United Kingdom. This was his first and only speech there. His right to sit in the House of Lords was removed less than a year later by a new law in 1999.
In 2013, he helped lead a special gathering for the Clan Murray in Dunedin, New Zealand. He is also the High Commissioner for Clan Murray in Australia. This means he represents the Murray family clan in Australia.
He is also a supporter of many groups. These include the Scottish Australian Heritage Council and the Australia Day Council (Victoria). He supports various Clan Murray groups in Australia and New Zealand. He is also a patron of St Andrew's Society Tasmania.

Malcolm Murray married Joy Partridge in 1970. They adopted two children, named Leigh and Elisa. Sadly, the Countess of Dunmore, Joy, passed away on August 4, 2015.
