Malcolm Subban (born December 21, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. He currently plays for the Belleville Senators in the American Hockey League (AHL). The Boston Bruins picked Malcolm in the first round of the 2012 NHL entry draft. He was the 24th player chosen overall. Malcolm has also played for other teams like the Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Malcolm comes from a family of talented athletes. His older brother, P. K., was a famous hockey defenceman who won the Norris Trophy. His younger brother, Jordan, was also drafted into the NHL.

Malcolm's Early Life

Malcolm Subban was born in Toronto, Ontario. His parents are Karl and Maria. His dad, Karl, was a great basketball player at Lakehead University. Malcolm's brothers, P. K. and Jordan, are also hockey players. P. K. is the oldest brother. He won the Norris Trophy in 2013. He played for the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils. Jordan was picked by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2013 NHL draft. He now plays for the Dornbirn Bulldogs in Austria.

Malcolm also has an older sister named Nastassia. She played basketball at York University. She became the top scorer in her university league. Malcolm started playing hockey when he was just three years old. He played defence until he was 12. Then, he switched to being a goaltender. He played in a top youth league in Toronto. In 2010, his team made it to the Canadian championship final.

Playing in Junior Hockey Leagues

Malcolm was chosen by the Belleville Bulls in the 2009 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft. He played his first game with the Bulls in the 2009–10 season. In the 2010–11 season, he became a regular player. He won 10 games and was named to the OHL's All-Rookie Team.

Before the 2012 NHL entry draft, Malcolm was a top goalie prospect. He was ranked as the number one goaltender in North America. In the 2011–12 OHL season, he won 29 games for the Bulls. He was also named the OHL's Goaltender of the Month in November. Due to an NHL lockout, Malcolm stayed with Belleville for the 2012–13 OHL season. He had a great season, winning 29 games. The Bulls made it to the Eastern Conference final. Malcolm played well in the playoffs. He was named to the OHL's Third All-Star Team.

Time with the Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins picked Malcolm 24th overall in the 2012 draft. He signed a three-year contract with them in September 2012. Malcolm went to his first NHL training camp in 2013. He even played against his brother P. K. in a preseason game. Malcolm stopped every shot he faced in that game. However, he was later sent to the Providence Bruins, Boston's minor league team. In Providence, he played 33 games. He had a good save percentage of .920.

Malcolm was called up to the NHL for the first time in January 2015. He was a backup goalie for four games but did not play. On February 20, Malcolm made his official NHL debut. He played against the St. Louis Blues. He was replaced during the game but returned later. He played 35 games for Providence that season.

In February 2016, Malcolm had a scary injury. He was hit in the throat by a puck during warmups. He fractured his larynx and missed several weeks. After recovering, he was sent back to Providence. He played one game for Boston in October 2016. He was then sent back to the AHL. By 2017, the Bruins re-signed Malcolm for two more years.

Time with the Vegas Golden Knights

In October 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights claimed Malcolm from the Bruins. This meant he joined the Golden Knights. He became the backup goalie for their very first game. On October 15, he won his first NHL game with Vegas. He almost had a shutout against his old team, the Boston Bruins. Malcolm played well while the main goalie, Marc-André Fleury, was injured.

In December 2017, Malcolm played against his brother P. K. for the first time in a regular season game. Malcolm made a career-high 41 saves. The Knights won the game 4–3. This was a special moment for the Subban brothers. Malcolm finished the season playing in 22 games. He had a strong record of 13 wins and 4 losses.

In the 2018–19 season, Malcolm played 21 games for Vegas. He recorded his first NHL shutout on March 21, 2019. This means he stopped every shot and didn't let the other team score. He signed a new contract with Vegas before the 2019–20 season. He played 20 games that season.

Time with the Chicago Blackhawks

In February 2020, Malcolm was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. He played one game for the Blackhawks in March 2020. The NHL season was then stopped because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Malcolm signed a new two-year contract with the Blackhawks in October 2020. He made his first start for them in January 2021. On February 7, he got his first win with the Blackhawks. He stopped 30 shots in a 2–1 victory. On February 25, he recorded his first shutout as a Blackhawk.

In the 2021–22 season, Malcolm was sent to the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago's minor league team. He played five games there.

Time with the Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets

In December 2021, Malcolm was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. He joined the team because their regular goalies were injured. He played his first game with the Sabres on December 4. In January 2022, Malcolm suffered an upper-body injury. He needed surgery and missed the rest of the season. While recovering, he even sang the national anthem at a Sabres game!

In 2022, he re-signed with the Sabres. He spent the 2022–23 season with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo's minor league team. He became their starting goalie. He helped the team reach the Eastern Conference finals in the playoffs. He also got the Americans' first playoff shutout since 2014.

In July 2023, Malcolm signed with the St. Louis Blues. He played for their minor league team, the Springfield Thunderbirds. In March 2024, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played for their minor league team, the Cleveland Monsters. He was called up to the Blue Jackets on April 5 and played one game for them.

Malcolm signed a contract with the Belleville Senators in October 2024.

Playing for Team Canada

Subban competed with the Canadian national junior team in the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Malcolm played for Team Canada in the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. This big tournament was held in Russia. He played in six games and helped Canada win four of them. Canada finished in fourth place at the tournament.
