Malcolm Subban (born December 21, 1993) is a Canadian ice hockey goalie. He's currently a free agent, meaning he's not signed with a team right now. The Boston Bruins picked him in the first round of the 2012 NHL draft, as the 24th player chosen overall. He has also played for the Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Before playing professionally, he played junior hockey for the Belleville Bulls in the Ontario Hockey League.
Malcolm comes from a family of talented hockey players. His older brother, P. K., was a famous defenceman who won the Norris Trophy. His younger brother, Jordan, was also drafted by an NHL team.

About Malcolm Subban
Malcolm Subban was born in Toronto, Ontario. His parents are Karl and Maria. His dad, Karl, was a star basketball player at Lakehead University. Malcolm's brothers, P. K. and Jordan, are also hockey players. P. K. won a big award called the Norris Trophy in 2013. He played for teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators. Jordan was picked by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2013 NHL draft.
Malcolm also has an older sister, Nastassia. She played basketball at York University and became the top scorer in her university league. Malcolm started playing hockey when he was just three years old. He played as a defenceman until he was 12. After that, he switched to being a goaltender. He played in a top youth league in Toronto. In 2010, he played in Canada's national championship final. He only let in three goals in that game, even though he faced 58 shots!
Playing Career
Junior Hockey Years
The Belleville Bulls picked Malcolm in the 2009 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft. He played his first game with the Bulls in the 2009–10 season. In the 2010–11 season, he became a regular player, winning 10 games. He was even named to the OHL's All-Rookie Team.
Before the 2012 NHL draft, Malcolm was a top-ranked goalie in North America. He continued to play well for the Bulls in the 2011–12 season, winning 29 games. He was named the OHL's Goaltender of the Month in November. Because of a lockout in the NHL, Malcolm stayed with Belleville for the 2012–13 season. He had a great record of 29 wins, 11 losses, and 4 overtime losses. The Bulls made it to the Eastern Conference final playoffs that year. Malcolm was also named to the OHL's Third All-Star Team.
Time with the Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins chose Malcolm as the 24th player in the 2012 NHL draft. He signed a three-year contract with them in September 2012. He went to his first NHL training camp with the Bruins in 2013. During a preseason game, he got to play against his brother P. K., who was on the Montreal Canadiens. Malcolm played for about 31 minutes and stopped every shot he faced!

After the preseason, he was sent to play for the Providence Bruins, Boston's minor league team. In Providence, he played 33 games, winning 15 of them. He also had one shutout, which means he didn't let any goals in during a game.
In January 2015, Malcolm was called up to the NHL for the first time. He was a backup goalie for Tuukka Rask for four games but didn't play. On February 20, he made his official NHL debut against the St. Louis Blues. He was replaced during the game but later returned. He played 35 games for Providence that season.
In February 2016, Malcolm had a scary injury. He was hit in the throat by a puck during warmups and had to go to the hospital. He had a fractured larynx (voice box) and missed at least eight weeks. After he recovered, he was sent back to Providence. He was called up to Boston again in October 2016 due to injuries to other goalies. He started one game for Boston but was replaced during the game. He played well for Providence during the 2016–17 season. After that season, the Bruins signed him for two more years.
Playing for the Vegas Golden Knights
In October 2017, Malcolm was claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights. This meant they picked him up from a list of available players. He became the backup goalie for the Golden Knights' very first game. He won his first NHL game with Vegas on October 15. It was a special game because he played against his old team, the Boston Bruins, and almost got a shutout!
Malcolm got injured again in October 2017 and was out for a while. When he returned, he played against his brother P. K. for the first time in a regular season game. Malcolm made a career-high 41 saves to help the Knights win! He got injured again in February 2018. He finished that season playing 22 games, winning 13 of them.
In the 2018–19 season, he played 21 games for Vegas. He got his first NHL shutout on March 21, 2019, in a 5–0 win against the Winnipeg Jets. He signed a new one-year contract with Vegas before the 2019–20 season.
Time with the Chicago Blackhawks
In February 2020, Malcolm was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. He played one game for the Blackhawks in March 2020 before the NHL season was stopped because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He signed a new two-year contract with the Blackhawks in October 2020. He made his first start for them in January 2021. On February 7, he got his first win with the Blackhawks, stopping 30 shots. He also recorded his first shutout for the team in a 2–0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In the 2021–22 season, Malcolm was sent to play for the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago's minor league team. He played five games there.
Moving to the Buffalo Sabres
In December 2021, Malcolm was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. He was needed because their regular goalies were injured or sick. He played his first game for the Sabres on December 4. In January 2022, he got injured again during a game. He had surgery and missed the rest of the season. While recovering, he even sang the national anthem at a Sabres home game!
He re-signed with the Sabres in July 2022. He played for their minor league team, the Rochester Americans, for the 2022–23 season. He became their main goalie, winning 20 games. The Americans made it to the Eastern Conference finals in the playoffs. Malcolm played well in the playoffs, getting the Americans' first playoff shutout since 2014.
Later Career
On July 1, 2023, Malcolm signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues. He played for their minor league team, the Springfield Thunderbirds, for the 2023–24 season. He played 31 games there.
In March 2024, the Blues traded Malcolm to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was immediately sent to their minor league team, the Cleveland Monsters. He played four games for Cleveland. He was called up to the Blue Jackets on April 5 and made his debut for them on April 7. Cleveland made the playoffs, and Malcolm played in two playoff games.
After the 2023–24 season, Malcolm became a free agent. In October 2024, he signed a tryout contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. He was later released by them. On October 28, he signed a one-year contract with the Belleville Senators, another AHL team. He played 24 games for Belleville.
International Play
Malcolm played for Team Canada in the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Russia. He played in six games and won four of them. Canada finished in fourth place at the tournament.
