Malcolm Tierney (born February 25, 1938 – died February 18, 2014) was an English actor. He was famous for appearing in many movies and TV shows.

Early Life of Malcolm Tierney
Malcolm Tierney's father, Ernest, was a boilermaker and a skilled draughtsman (someone who makes detailed technical drawings). He was from Warrington and worked at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Malcolm's mother, Agnes, worked in cotton factories.
Malcolm went to St Mary's Roman Catholic School in Failsworth. He then studied design at the Manchester School of Art. While working as a textile designer, he joined amateur plays at the Bolton Little Theatre. This theater group helped him a lot.
Because of his talent, he won a scholarship in 1958. This allowed him to study acting at the Rose Bruford College in Kent. He got his first acting job in 1962.
Malcolm Tierney's Acting Career
Malcolm Tierney played many different characters in his career. He was known for his roles in popular TV series and movies.
Some of his well-known TV roles include:
- Captain Monk Adderley in the original Poldark series.
- Tommy McArdle in Brookside from 1984 to 1987.
- Charlie Gimbert in Lovejoy (he appeared in 26 episodes).
- Geoffrey Ellsworth-Smythe in A Bit of a Do.
- Patrick Woolton in House of Cards.
- Chief Constable Raymond in Dalziel and Pascoe.
He also appeared in famous science fiction shows. In 1977, he was an Imperial officer in Star Wars. He also appeared in the Doctor Who series The Trial of a Time Lord in 1986.
In the movie Braveheart, he played an English sheriff. This character executes the wife of William Wallace. Wallace then kills the sheriff.
Stage and Docudrama Roles
Malcolm Tierney performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1974–75 and again in 2005. In 1974, he played Claudio in the play Measure for Measure.
In 2007, he acted in a docudrama called Hindenburg: The Untold Story. A docudrama is a TV show or movie that tells a true story using actors. In this show, he played Dr. Hugo Eckener. The story was about the crash of the airship Hindenburg. This show was aired for the 70th anniversary of the disaster.
In 2008, he played Captain Smith of the RMS Titanic in another docudrama. This one was called Titanic: The Unsinkable Ship.
On the radio, he played Commander Brill-Oudener in the BBC Radio drama The Snow Goose. This was broadcast in May 2010.
Personal Life
Malcolm Tierney once shared a flat (an apartment) with Tom Baker. Tom Baker is famous for playing the Fourth Doctor in the BBC TV show Doctor Who.
In 1979, Malcolm Tierney married Andrea Schinko. She is an artist from Austria. They had two daughters, Elsa and Anna. Elsa is an artist, and Anna is an actress.
Death
Malcolm Tierney passed away on February 18, 2014. He died from pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. This was just one week before his 76th birthday.
Actress Vanessa Redgrave wrote about him after his death. She called him a "loving man" and a "brilliant actor." He is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London.
