Discover the Story of Maleficent
Maleficent is a strong fairy who lives in a magical forest called the Moors. This forest is next to a human kingdom. When she is young, Maleficent meets a human boy named Stefan. They become friends, but Stefan cares more about becoming powerful than about Maleficent.
As they grow up, Maleficent becomes the protector of the Moors. One day, the human King Henry tries to take over the Moors. Maleficent fights him and makes him leave. The king is badly hurt. He says that whoever defeats Maleficent will become the next king and marry his daughter, Princess Leila.
Stefan visits Maleficent in the Moors. He gives her a special drink that makes her sleepy. Instead of killing her, he cuts off her wings. Fairies can be hurt by iron, and this act deeply wounds Maleficent. Stefan takes her wings to the king. Maleficent is heartbroken by Stefan's betrayal. She turns the Moors into a dark place. She finds a raven named Diaval. He becomes her helper and friend. She can change him into different forms, even a human.
The Curse on Princess Aurora
Later, Diaval tells Maleficent that Stefan is now king. He is having a party for his new baby daughter, Aurora. Maleficent goes to the party without an invitation. She puts a curse on the baby princess. She says that on Aurora's sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel. Then, she will fall into a deep sleep forever.
King Stefan begs Maleficent for mercy. Maleficent says the curse can only be broken by "true love's kiss." She believes true love does not exist. King Stefan is very worried about Aurora. He sends her to live with three pixies: Knotgrass, Thistlewit, and Flittle. They are supposed to keep her safe until after her sixteenth birthday. He also destroys all the spinning wheels in his kingdom. King Stefan becomes very focused on stopping the curse.
Maleficent's Changing Heart
At first, Maleficent does not like Aurora. But the pixies are not very good at taking care of the child. Maleficent starts to watch over Aurora from far away. She begins to care for her. When Aurora is fifteen, she meets Maleficent. Aurora knows someone has been watching her. She calls Maleficent her "fairy godmother."
Maleficent tries hard to undo the curse she placed on Aurora. But she finds that the curse is very strong. It can only be broken by true love's kiss, and nothing else. In the forest, Aurora meets a young man named Prince Philip. They like each other right away.
The day before Aurora's sixteenth birthday, Aurora tells Maleficent she wants to live with her in the Moors. When Aurora goes back to the pixies' cottage, the pixies accidentally tell her about the curse. Aurora learns who Maleficent really is. She quickly runs to her father's castle.
The Battle for the Kingdoms
King Stefan sees his daughter for a short time. Then he locks her in a room to keep her safe. He also plans to capture Maleficent. But the curse pulls Aurora to the castle dungeon. A spinning wheel magically appears there. Aurora pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep. The curse has come true.
Maleficent wants to save Aurora. She brings Prince Philip to the castle. But his kiss does not wake Aurora. Maleficent feels very sad. She apologizes to Aurora and kisses her forehead. This kiss wakes Aurora up! Maleficent's strong, motherly love for Aurora counts as true love.
As Maleficent and Aurora try to leave, King Stefan and his guards attack them. They throw an iron net over Maleficent. Maleficent changes Diaval into a dragon. He fights the guards, but he is also caught. Maleficent feels weak from the iron. Stefan tries to hurt her. But Aurora finds Maleficent's wings. She sets them free. The wings fly to Maleficent and reattach themselves.
Maleficent carries Stefan to the top of the castle tower. She quickly defeats him in a fight. She does not want to kill him. But Stefan attacks her again as she turns away. They both fall from the tower. Maleficent opens her wings and flies. Stefan loses his grip and falls to his death.
In the end, Maleficent brings the Moors back to its beautiful, magical state. Aurora is crowned queen. This helps to bring the two kingdoms together in peace.
