New actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, and Michelle Pfeiffer joined the cast.

The film was released in the United States on October 18, 2019. It earned over $491 million worldwide. Critics had mixed feelings about the movie. They liked the acting by Jolie, Fanning, and Pfeiffer. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Understanding the Story: Maleficent's New Adventure

The movie takes place five years after the first film. Aurora is now the Queen of the Moors. Maleficent is her guardian and protector. But people in the nearby kingdom of Ulstead still think Maleficent is a villain.

Prince Phillip, from Ulstead, asks Aurora to marry him. Maleficent is not happy about this. She warns Aurora against it, but Aurora wants to prove her wrong.

A Difficult Dinner Party

Phillip's parents, King John and Queen Ingrith, invite Aurora, Maleficent, and Diaval (Maleficent's raven) to dinner. Queen Ingrith is secretly planning a war against the fairies. She has workers making iron weapons, which are dangerous to all fairies.

During dinner, Ingrith tries to make Maleficent angry. She talks about old stories that make Maleficent seem evil. Ingrith also hints that Maleficent killed two human fairy hunters. Maleficent replies that humans have been kidnapping fairies.

Ingrith then says that the marriage will make her Aurora's real mother. Maleficent gets very angry and unleashes a burst of magic. King John suddenly faints, and Ingrith blames Maleficent for cursing him. Aurora doesn't believe Maleficent, and Maleficent has to escape.

Maleficent Discovers Her Kind

As Maleficent flies away, Ingrith's helper, Gerda, shoots her with an iron bullet. Maleficent falls into the ocean. She is saved by a mysterious winged creature. She wakes up in a hidden cave. This cave is home to other fairies like her, called the Dark Fey.

Their leader is Conall, who is peaceful. Another Dark Fey, Borra, wants to fight humans. Maleficent learns she is one of the last Dark Fey. They were almost wiped out by humans. She also finds out she is a descendant of the Phoenix, a very powerful ancient fairy.

The Queen's Deception and a Wedding Battle

Aurora starts to feel unhappy about being a noblewoman in Ulstead. She discovers that Queen Ingrith cursed King John. Ingrith used Maleficent's old cursed spindle. Ingrith hates fairies and wants to destroy them all. She plans to use iron weapons and a deadly red powder.

The fairies from the Moors are invited to the royal wedding. But they are trapped inside the castle chapel. Gerda releases the deadly red powder. A fairy named Flittle bravely sacrifices herself to stop the organ that releases the powder.

The Dark Fey attack Ulstead. Many fairies are being killed. Maleficent, using her Phoenix power, joins the fight. She almost kills Ingrith, but Aurora asks her to stop. Aurora tells Maleficent that she is her only mother. Ingrith then shoots Maleficent with a crossbow. Maleficent saves Aurora but turns into ashes.

Peace and a New Beginning

Aurora cries over Maleficent's ashes. Her tears bring Maleficent back to life, and she becomes a powerful Phoenix. Ingrith tries to throw Aurora off the tower. Maleficent saves her again.

Prince Phillip helps make peace between humans and fairies. Maleficent changes back to her fairy form. She finally gives her blessing to Aurora and Phillip's marriage. Lickspittle, a pixie who worked for Ingrith, gives Maleficent the cursed spindle. Maleficent destroys it, and King John wakes up.

Ingrith is caught by Borra and the Dark Fey. Maleficent turns her into a goat as punishment. After Aurora and Phillip marry, Maleficent goes back to the Moors. She teaches the young fairies to fly. She promises to return for Aurora and Phillip's future child's christening.
