Malek Bennabi (born January 1, 1905 – died October 31, 1973) was an important Algerian writer and thinker. He wrote a lot about human societies, especially Muslim ones. He focused on why Muslim civilizations might have declined. Bennabi believed that a lack of new ideas led to what he called civilizational bankruptcy. He thought that for Islamic society to become great again, people needed to feel strong and creative. Muslims needed to know their hard work and new ideas would be rewarded.

Learning and Early Life
Malek Bennabi was born in Constantine, Algeria, in 1905. He studied engineering in Paris and Algiers. Later, he moved to Cairo, where he spent a lot of time studying history, philosophy, and how societies work.
In 1963, he went back to Algeria. He saw many new scientific inventions and technologies. This made him think deeply about culture in the early 1900s. His goal was not just to repeat old discoveries. Instead, he wanted to find out what truly makes up a culture and how civilizations begin.
Understanding Culture and Ideas
In one of his books, Les Conditions de la Renaissance (1948), Bennabi explained what culture is. He said it's how a group of people lives and grows. This includes their art, their morals, their practical skills, and their technology. He believed that once these parts of culture are clear, new ideas can start to form. These new ideas then make society lively and help a new civilization grow.
In another book, The Question of Culture (1954), he talked about how society is organized. He said that how a society lives, moves, or even declines, is connected to the ideas within it. If the main ideas in a society change, then everything else in that society will also change. Ideas are very important for a society to develop. Different stages of a society's growth are really different stages of its intellectual growth.
If a society reaches a "renaissance" (a time of rebirth and great progress), it means it has amazing ideas. These ideas can solve the important problems of that society. Bennabi added that ideas can help society grow, or they can spread like a sickness, making growth hard or even impossible.
Bennabi's Key Thoughts
Bennabi often talked about what he called 'Post-Almohad Men'. He felt that modern society had made people feel empty. They lacked big goals and dreams.
He noticed that in the 19th century, countries measured their power by how many factories, cannons, ships, and gold they had. But in the 20th century, ideas became very important. They were seen as valuable both within a country and globally. Many developing countries didn't fully grasp this. They still felt less important if they didn't have many material things.
Muslims in developing countries often felt inferior to people in developed countries. They thought their problems were due to not having enough weapons, planes, or banks. This feeling of being less capable could lead to sadness. On a social level, it could lead to just "heaping up" things without real progress. To truly move forward, Bennabi said Muslims needed to focus on ideas, not just objects. The new world depends more and more on ideas and smart thinking. So, Arab and Muslim countries, especially those without a lot of material power, should value ideas more.
He also criticized Muslim society for often looking back too much. He felt Muslims tended to just admire past achievements instead of creating new ones. He said that Muslim countries were often controlled by Western powers. He believed this wasn't Islam's fault. Instead, it was because Muslims and their leaders had forgotten the true meaning of Islamic values.
Bennabi pointed out that after Egypt's defeat in the Six-days war in 1967, it was the global Muslim community's understanding and ideas that needed to be renewed, not just their weapons. While looking back at the Golden Age of Islam is good, it's more important to understand the political values and systems of past leaders. Then, we should re-interpret these and use them in today's world. Making society better is a key part of Islam. Bennabi believed that being controlled mentally had led Muslims to a state of moral and intellectual weakness. He thought that if morals weakened, thinking would also weaken.
A Theory of Social Change
In his book, Bases of Civilization, Malek Bennabi shared his theory about how societies change. He said that any civilization can be broken down into three main parts: people, raw materials (like land), and time. He called this the civilization equation: Civilization = People + Raw Material + Time.
Bennabi argued that for any society to have a rebirth or a "renaissance," these three parts must come together. After studying many civilizations throughout history, Bennabi concluded that every civilization starts with a strong moral system. This system usually comes from a religious foundation.
He used his theory to explain why many social movements failed. They often focused too much on practical things and missed the importance of moral improvement.
