Malibu Islet facts for kids
Malibu Islet, also known as Malibu Isle or Forbidden Island, is a small island in British Columbia, Canada. It sits at the entrance of Princess Louisa Inlet. This island helps form a narrow passage. This passage connects Princess Louisa Inlet and Jervis Inlet. Boats entering Princess Louisa Inlet must pass between the island and a special navigation buoy.
Where is Malibu Islet Located?
Malibu Islet is found in a beautiful part of Canada. It is south of Malibu Rapids. It is also east of a water area called Queens Reach. This area is part of the larger Jervis Inlet. The island is located within the New Westminster Land District in British Columbia.
Why is it Called Forbidden Island?
Malibu Islet is part of the traditional lands of the Shishalh people. These are the First Nations people of this area. On all official maps, it is called Malibu Isle. However, it has a special nickname: Forbidden Island.
The Shishalh people traditionally used islands and caves in this region for burying their ancestors. Because of this, the island is considered a sacred place. To show respect for these traditions, it is not allowed to go onto the island for any reason. This is why the Young Life's Malibu Club and others call it Forbidden Island. It helps everyone remember to honor the history and culture of the Shishalh people.
