Mammea is a group of about 70 different kinds of flowering plants. These plants are mostly evergreen trees, which means they keep their leaves all year round. They belong to the plant family called Calophyllaceae.
Many Mammea trees grow delicious, edible fruits. Their flowers have a special design. They have a single outer leaf, called a calyx, which opens up into two or three smaller sepals. Inside, there are usually 4 to 8 petals. After the flowers bloom, they form berries that contain 1 to 4 seeds. The leaves of these trees are quite strong and stiff, and they often have tiny clear dots on them.
Mammea Species Around the World
There are many different types of Mammea trees found all over the world, especially in warm, tropical places. For example, at least two species, like Mammea americana, grow in tropical America and the West Indies.
About 20 species, including M. africana, are found in mainland Africa. Many more species live on the island of Madagascar. The rest of the Mammea species are found in places like Indomalaya and the Pacific region.
Scientists keep track of all these different species. Some examples of the many Mammea species include:
- Mammea africana – also known as the African mammee apple
- Mammea americana
- Mammea immansueta
- Mammea odorata
- Mammea suriga
- Mammea usambarensis
