History of Mammoth
Mammoth was started around 1872. It was first called Mammoth Camp. The town grew because of the nearby Mammoth Mine.
For many years, Mammoth was a "bedroom community." This means people lived in Mammoth but traveled to work in the bigger San Manuel mine nearby. The San Manuel mine closed in 2003.
The old Copper Creek ghost town is close by. It is a popular place for people to visit. Minerals from the old Mammoth-St. Anthony Mine are very famous. You can find them in many large mineral collections around the world. Another ghost town, Tiger, Arizona, used to be where the Tiger mine was, but nothing is left of it today.
In November 2014, Mammoth was part of a made-up scary story. This story was shared on a website called Reddit. The story said a disease had wiped out everyone in the town. Some people believed the story, like when a radio show in 1938 made people think aliens were invading. Because of this, many people called the town to ask what was happening.
