Mammoth is a small, unnamed place in Ozark County, Missouri, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather a community where people live. Mammoth is located about 5 miles (8 km) south-southeast of Gainesville, right along Missouri Route T.

This area is special because it's where two creeks meet: Possum Walk Creek flows into Lick Creek. Another small stream, Little Creek, joins Lick Creek about 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of Mammoth.

History of Mammoth

The area around Mammoth has an interesting history, especially when it comes to its name and how mail was delivered there.

Early Days as Lick Valley

Long ago, this place was known as "Lick Valley." It got its first post office on June 28, 1872. A post office is where people send and receive mail. The first person in charge of this post office was Joseph C. Miller. He was a former soldier who had served in a local cavalry group during the American Civil War.

However, the Lick Valley Post Office didn't last very long. It was closed down on March 6, 1876.

How Mammoth Got Its Name

The name "Mammoth" officially started being used when a new post office opened in 1902. This new post office was established by William Dye, who was the local postmaster at the time. The name "Mammoth" might have come from something large or impressive in the area, though the exact reason isn't recorded.

The Mammoth Post Office served the community for many years, helping people connect through mail. But eventually, like many small rural post offices, it was closed down in 1955. Even though the post office is gone, the name Mammoth still refers to this small community in Ozark County.
