Lick Creek is a small stream located in Ozark County, Missouri. It is a branch, also known as a tributary, of the North Fork River.
Where Does Lick Creek Start and End?
Lick Creek begins in an area called the Caney Mountain Conservation Area. This spot is about five miles north of a town named Gainesville.
The Creek's Journey
As Lick Creek flows, it moves south, running alongside Missouri Route 5 north of Gainesville. It then goes under U. S. Route 160 in the southern part of Gainesville.
The stream continues its journey, first flowing south and then turning east. Finally, Lick Creek empties into Norfork Lake. This lake is located across from the community of Udall.
Why Is It Called Lick Creek?
The name "Lick Creek" comes from something interesting found near its path. There were several mineral licks close to the creek. A mineral lick is a place where animals can go to lick essential mineral nutrients from the ground.
