Manfred "Manni" Burgsmüller was a famous German footballer. He was born on December 22, 1949, and passed away on May 18, 2019. Manni mostly played as a striker, which means he was great at scoring goals! Sometimes, he also played as a midfielder.
He played in 447 games in the top German league, the Bundesliga. He spent 17 seasons there, mainly with Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen. During his career, he scored an amazing 213 goals in the Bundesliga. After he stopped playing professional football in his 40s, he even played American football as a kicker!
Football Career Highlights
Manni Burgsmüller started his football journey playing for local teams like Rot-Weiss Essen and Bayer Uerdingen. He played for both clubs at different times. In his first time with Bayer Uerdingen, he scored many goals, including 29 goals in two different seasons!
In October 1976, Manni joined Borussia Dortmund. This was a very successful time for him. Even though he often played as a midfielder, he scored a lot of goals. He never scored less than 15 goals in a Bundesliga season while at Dortmund. In the 1980–81 season, he scored his personal best of 27 goals in the top league. This helped his team finish in seventh place. He was the second-highest goal scorer that season, just behind Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
After playing one season for 1. FC Nürnberg, Burgsmüller moved to the second division of German football. He joined Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. In his first year there, he was super important for the team. He scored 29 goals, which was 12 more than any other player in the league! This helped his team avoid being moved down to a lower league.
In November 1985, when he was almost 36 years old, Manni returned to the Bundesliga. He signed with SV Werder Bremen. Here, he achieved great team success. He scored in his very first game for Werder Bremen. He also scored two goals in his third game, helping his team win 6–0! He scored 13 goals in just 20 matches that season. Werder Bremen finished second in the league. Manni was a key player when Werder Bremen won the league title in 1988.
Manni Burgsmüller made history on October 11, 1988. He scored a goal for Werder Bremen in a big European match. He was 38 years and 293 days old at the time. This made him the oldest player ever to score a goal in the history of the European Cup!
He finally retired from professional football when he was almost 41. He also played three friendly matches for the West Germany national team. His first game for his country was on November 16, 1977, when West Germany won 4–1 against Switzerland.
Life After Football
After his amazing football career, Manni Burgsmüller tried something new! In 1996, he made a comeback in NFL Europa, which was a professional American football league in Europe. He became the kicker for Rhein Fire. He played for them from 1996 to 2002. This made him the oldest professional American football player ever, at 52 years old! He also won two World Bowl championships with Rhein Fire, in 1998 and 2000.
Manfred Burgsmüller passed away on May 18, 2019, in Essen. On August 1, 2019, fans and former teammates organized a special football match to remember him. Many famous players, like Frank Mill and Michael Lusch, took part. About 2,000 people watched the match, including two of Manni's daughters. The event raised €15,000 for a children's charity called Kinderlachen.
