The DFL-Supercup is a big football match played in Germany. It brings together two top teams: the winner of the Bundesliga (Germany's main football league) and the winner of the DFB-Pokal (Germany's main cup competition). The Deutsche Fußball Liga (which means German Football League) organizes this exciting event.

History of the Supercup

The Supercup has a long history in German football. It was first played officially from 1987 to 1996. Back then, it was called the DFB-Supercup because the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) ran it.

After 1996, the Supercup was replaced by a different competition for a while. But football fans missed it! So, in 2008, a special match was played, even though it wasn't officially part of the main competitions. This match showed how much people wanted the Supercup back.

Because of this, the Supercup was officially brought back in 2010. From then on, it was renamed the DFL-Supercup. This new name shows that the Deutsche Fußball Liga now organizes the event.

How the Supercup Works

The DFL-Supercup is a single match. It's a chance for the best teams to prove who is stronger at the start of the new football season.

Who Plays?

Usually, the match is between the team that won the Bundesliga and the team that won the DFB-Pokal. But what if one team wins both? This is called winning the double. If a team wins both the league and the cup, then the Supercup match will be against the team that finished second in the Bundesliga. This makes sure there are always two different teams playing.

Match Rules

The game lasts for 90 minutes. If the score is a draw after 90 minutes, there is no extra time played. Instead, the winner is decided right away by a penalty shoot-out. Each team takes turns shooting from the penalty spot until a winner is found.

Where is it Played?

The Supercup match is often played at the home stadium of the team that won the DFB-Pokal. If a team won the double, then the match might be played at the home of the Bundesliga runner-up. However, the DFL ultimately decides where the match will take place.
