Serving as Interior Minister
In July 1993, Mr. Kanther became the Minister of the Interior for all of Germany. He took over this important job from Rudolf Seiters. As Minister of the Interior, he was in charge of many things related to safety and security within the country.
During his time as minister, he made a decision to ban the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). This was because of attacks against Turkish facilities. He also worked on issues like violence from groups such as the Red Army Faction. He was against people having dual citizenship, meaning being a citizen of two countries at once.
In 1994, he was elected to the Bundestag. The Bundestag is like the German parliament. He represented the area of Hanau. The government, led by Helmut Kohl, was re-elected. So, Mr. Kanther continued his role as Minister of the Interior for a second term.
He helped make changes to policies about people seeking asylum in Germany. He also introduced a rule that made it compulsory for foreigners under sixteen years old to have a visa. This is a special document that allows them to enter the country. In 1998, he was re-elected to the Bundestag.
