Manitoba Band Operated Schools facts for kids
First Nation Operated Schools in Manitoba and other parts of Canada are special schools. The Government of Canada helps pay for them. These schools are run by local School boards chosen by the community. This means they are not directly controlled by the local Chief and Band Council.
Why are these schools important? They help First Nation students get a great education. They also make sure students can easily move between different school systems.
How First Nation Schools Work
First Nation Operated Schools often follow the same rules as other schools in the province. This is even though they don't have to by law. They do this to help their students.
Following the same rules means a few things:
- Students can easily switch from a First Nation school to a provincial school.
- The schools keep their accreditation. This means their high school diplomas are accepted by colleges and universities.
Teachers and Unions
One main difference between First Nation Operated Schools and provincial schools is about teacher groups. In most provincial schools, teachers are part of a union like The Manitoba Teachers' Society (MTS). This union helps teachers with their rights and responsibilities.
Most teachers in First Nation schools are not part of this provincial union. However, there are two exceptions in Manitoba:
- Teachers in the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (Nelson House Teachers' Association).
- Teachers in the Sandy Bay Ojibwa First Nation (Sandy Bay Teachers' Association).
These teachers have many of the same rights as other union members. But they cannot join the MTS pension or disability plans. This is because there are no laws that allow them to do so. Still, they pay the same yearly fees as other union members.
