Colin H. Burnell (1880-1946) was a farmer from Manitoba. He helped lead important farmer groups and was president of Manitoba Pool Elevators.

Manitoba Pool Elevators was a company that helped farmers sell their grain. It was started in 1924 in Manitoba, Canada. This company was special because it was a "cooperative," meaning it was owned and run by the farmers themselves. Its main job was to buy grain from farmers and store it in large buildings called grain elevators.

What Was Manitoba Pool Elevators?

Manitoba Pool Elevators played a big role in the grain trade in Canada. Farmers would bring their crops, like wheat, to these elevators. The company would then store the grain safely until it could be sold and shipped. This helped farmers get fair prices for their hard work.

Early Years and Challenges

When it first started, Manitoba Pool Elevators became part of a larger group called the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. This meant they worked together to manage grain sales. However, in November 1932, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool faced big financial problems and went bankrupt. This was a tough time for many businesses. After this, Manitoba Pool Elevators became an independent company again.

Growing and Changing Over Time

Manitoba Pool Elevators continued to operate for many years. It helped thousands of farmers in Manitoba. Over time, the way grain was bought and sold changed. Companies began to merge to become larger and more efficient.

In 1998, Manitoba Pool Elevators joined forces with another big company, the Alberta Wheat Pool. Together, they formed a new company called Agricore Cooperative Limited. This merger created a much larger organization to serve farmers.

Becoming a Public Company

Just a few years later, in 2001, Agricore Cooperative Ltd. combined its business with United Grain Growers. The new company was named Agricore United. This was a big change because Agricore United became a "publicly traded company." This means its shares could be bought and sold by anyone on the stock market, not just farmers. It was no longer a farmer-owned cooperative.

Finally, in 2007, Agricore United was taken over by the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. This was the same company that Manitoba Pool Elevators had been connected to many years before. The combined company was then renamed Viterra. This marked the end of Manitoba Pool Elevators as a separate company, but its history is an important part of Canadian agriculture.
