Viterra Limited is a major Canadian company that handles and sells grain. It started from groups of farmers called cooperatives, like the famous Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, who worked together to sell their crops.

Over the years, Viterra grew into a global agri-business, which is a company focused on farming and food production. It has offices and facilities in Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and China.

The company works in three main areas. It handles and sells grain, provides products to farmers, and processes food. This means Viterra is involved in many steps of getting food from the farm field to your dinner table. In 2013, a large company named Glencore bought Viterra.

What Does Viterra Do?

Handling and Selling Grain

Viterra's main job is to collect, store, and ship grain. It has large storage buildings called grain terminals in two of the best farming areas in the world: Western Canada and South Australia. From these places, Viterra sends grain to countries all over the globe.

Helping Farmers

Viterra is also a big supplier for farmers in Canada. It has over 250 stores across the prairie provinces. These stores sell important items like fertilizer, seeds, and equipment that farmers need to grow healthy crops.

Making Food Products

The company also turns crops into other products. It owns businesses that make it a top producer of industrial oats and pasta in North America. In Australia, it's a major producer of malt, which is used to make drinks. It also makes products from canola and creates animal feed for farm animals in New Zealand.

A Look Back in Time

Viterra was officially created in 2007 when the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool bought another large grain company, Agricore United. Viterra's story really begins with the farmer-owned co-operatives of the 1920s, known as wheat pools. These groups helped farmers get a fair price for their grain.

Over time, Viterra also took over the Australian Barley Board, which was once a government-run group in Australia that managed barley sales.

This chart shows how many smaller companies came together over the years to form the Viterra we know today.

Companies often grow by merging with or buying other companies. This has been a big part of Viterra's history.

Mergers and Growth

  • In 2009, Viterra bought ABB Grain, an Australian company, for C$1.4 billion. This helped Viterra expand its business in Australia.
  • In 2012, Viterra received offers from other companies that wanted to buy it. Glencore, a huge international company, made the winning offer of $6.1 billion.
  • After Glencore bought Viterra, it sold some of Viterra's Canadian farm supply stores to another company called Agrium.
  • In 2016, Glencore sold a 40% share of its agriculture business to the Canada Pension Plan for US$2.5 billion.
  • In 2020, Glencore's agriculture business was renamed Viterra, bringing back the well-known name.
  • In 2022, Viterra bought Gavilon, another grain company, for $1.1 billion.
  • In 2023, it was announced that Viterra would merge with Bunge Limited, another major agriculture company. The Government of Canada approved this merger in January 2025.
