Manly, New Zealand

Manly is a lively suburb located on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, which is in the northern part of Auckland, New Zealand. It has a main shopping area called Manly Village. You can find Big Manly Beach to the north and Little Manly Beach to the south. This area used to be a popular spot for seaside holidays. Now, it is mostly a place where people live, and they can easily travel to central Auckland for work or school.

History of Manly

Manly was first home to the Ngāti Kahu people, who are a Māori iwi (tribe). There are also two old Māori fortified villages, called , in the area. In 1851, the land became part of a large purchase by the New Zealand government. By the 1890s, the Polkinghorne family settled here.

In the 1920s, two people named Ted Brown and Laurie Taylor started to develop the area. They even built a pier off Little Manly Beach. Around this time, the region was given its current name, Manly. It was named after a similar beach suburb in Sydney, Australia.

Later, around 1927, the Hopper Family moved to Manly. They farmed the land for many years. In the 1950s, this family began to divide their land into smaller sections for houses. They also helped develop other parts of the Hibiscus Coast.

People of Manly

Manly covers about 2.61 square kilometres. As of June 2023, around 6150 people live here. This means there are about 2356 people per square kilometre.

In the 2023 New Zealand census, Manly had 5,928 residents. This was a small increase from the 2018 census. The average age of people in Manly was 44.6 years. About 18.5% of the people were under 15 years old. Also, 22.2% were 65 years or older.

Most people in Manly are of European (Pākehā) background, making up about 90.1%. There are also people from other backgrounds, including Māori (11.2%), Pasifika (3.6%), and Asian (5.5%). English is spoken by almost everyone (97.5%).

Beautiful Beaches

Manly is lucky to have three beaches. Two are on the northern side of the peninsula, and one is on the southern side.

Big Manly Beach

This is the largest and most famous beach in Manly. It has soft, white sand and is a great place for swimming. Big Manly Beach stretches for about 1.25 kilometres and offers views over Whangaparāoa Bay. During the summer, you can often find a swimming pontoon floating here, which is fun for jumping into the water.

Swann Beach

Next to Big Manly Beach, to the west, is Swann Beach. These two beaches together form an area called Polkinghornes Bay.

Little Manly Beach

Located on the southern side of Manly, Little Manly Beach is known for its calm waters and pretty views. It is about 300 metres long, making it one of the smaller beaches on the peninsula. In 2018, Little Manly also got its own swimming pontoon for the summer months.

Education in Manly

Whangaparaoa School is a primary school for students in years 1 to 6 (ages 5-11). It is a coeducational school, meaning both boys and girls attend. As of February 2024. , the school has a roll of 692 students. The school celebrated its 100th birthday in 2002!

Manly offers many ways to stay active and have fun.

Sailing Adventures

The Manly Sailing Club is a popular spot for sailing fans. They host many sailing competitions, from local events to national and even international races, off the coast of Big Manly Beach. The club started on 13 April 1964 (61 years ago) (1964-04-13). They also teach people how to sail through the Russell Coutts Sailing Foundation and work with local schools.

Bowling Fun

Manly has its own bowling club, the Manly Bowling Club, which began on 13 August 1956; 68 years ago (1956-08-13). Each year, the club holds many bowling games and social events for its members.

Tennis Courts

Manly is home to two tennis clubs, located in Edith Hopper Park and Manly Park.

  • Whangaparaoa Tennis Club: This is the bigger club, found in Edith Hopper Park. It started in 1951 in Manly Park and moved to its current spot in 1978. The club has six courts that are lit up at night, along with other facilities. They offer lessons for all ages and skill levels.
  • Manly Park Seniors Tennis Club: This club is in Manly Park, next to the bowling club. It has four courts and facilities for players.

Netball Centre

The Hibiscus Coast Netball Centre has six netball courts and is located in Edith Hopper Park. On 25 February 2021, the club decided to join Netball North Harbour for its administration.

Triathlon Challenges

Manly Park has been a host for the Weet-bix Tryathlon several times. This event is a fun challenge for kids, combining swimming, cycling, and running.
