Horace Mann Arts and Sciences Magnet Middle School is a special kind of public school called a magnet school. It was named after Horace Mann, who was an important person in education and a Congressman.
School History and Changes
This school has had a few different names over the years. It was once known as Horace Mann High School and also Horace Mann Junior High School. The school first opened its doors in 1955.
Back then, schools were often separated by race in many parts of the United States. Horace Mann High School was originally opened for African American students. In 1958, a court in the United States decided that this school was just as good as schools for white students. This was an important step towards making all schools equal.
Later, in 2004, the school building got a big makeover. A company called Interior Design Associates won an award for their excellent work on the renovation.
