The Manning Memorial Light is a special lighthouse near Empire, Michigan. People also call it the Robert H. Manning Memorial Lighthouse or just Manning Light. This lighthouse was built to remember a man named Robert H. Manning. He lived in Empire for a long time.
Mr. Manning loved to go fishing far out in the lake. He often came back to shore late at night. He used to tell his friends and family that he wished there was a lighthouse to help guide him home. After he passed away in 1989, his friends and family decided to build a lighthouse in his honor. The Manning Memorial Light first shined in 1990.
This lighthouse is quite new for Michigan. It is the second newest lighthouse in the state. The newest one is the Tri-Centennial Light of Detroit. The Manning Light is also one of three lighthouses in Michigan built as a memorial. Another famous memorial light is the William Livingtone Memorial Light.
A Lighthouse Far Away: The Arizona Replica
Did you know there is a smaller copy of the Manning Memorial Light? It is located very far away from Michigan. This replica lighthouse stands on Lake Havasu in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
Building the Replica Lighthouse
This smaller version is about 20-foot (6.1 m) tall. It is located in Mohave County, Arizona. The replica was officially opened on February 2, 2003. A group called the Lake Havasu Lighthouse Club helped build it. They got support from Crazyhorse Campgrounds.
What the Replica Looks Like
The replica lighthouse has a light that spins. It flashes an amber (yellow-orange) color sixty times every minute. You can even see a satellite photo of this replica on Google maps. It is located right across from the famous London Bridge in Lake Havasu City.
