About Manns Harbor
Long ago, before the first European settlers arrived, a Native American village called Dasamongueponke was located near where Manns Harbor is today.
Manns Harbor is located on the western side of the Croatan Sound. This sound is a body of water that separates the mainland from Roanoke Island. For many years, people used a ferry to cross the sound to get to Roanoke Island. This changed in 1957 when the William B. Umstead Bridge was built. Later, in 2002, the four-lane Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge was completed. These bridges now connect Manns Harbor on the mainland to Manteo on Roanoke Island. This makes Manns Harbor an important gateway to North Carolina's famous Outer Banks.
The people of Manns Harbor are part of Dare County. They are represented by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. This board helps make decisions for the county, including Manns Harbor. The community is in District 1, along with Manteo, Roanoke Island, and Wanchese.
A military training area, known as the Dare County Bombing Range, is located nearby. Military aircraft sometimes use this area for practice.
