Manuel Velez Pangilinan (born July 14, 1946), often called Manny Pangilinan or MVP, is a famous Filipino businessman. He is also a big supporter of sports in the Philippines. He leads a company called First Pacific, which is based in Hong Kong. This company invests in many businesses across Asia.

MVP is also the chairman of First Pacific's main businesses in the Philippines. These include Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, PLDT, and Philex Mining Corporation. He is a top leader for the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), which is the national group for basketball. He was its first president from 2007 to 2018. Manny Pangilinan also helps his old school, San Beda University, as its current chairman.

Manny Pangilinan's Early Life and School

Manny Pangilinan grew up in San Juan, Philippines. His mother, Soledad Velez, worked at a department store. His father, Dominador Pangilinan, started as a messenger and later became a bank president. Manny spent his summers in Baguio because his grandfather was a teacher and later a school superintendent.

Manny went to San Beda for his elementary and high school education. He then studied Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University. He graduated with high honors. After that, he won a scholarship to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree there in 1968.

Manny Pangilinan's Business Career

Manny Pangilinan's first job was at a company called Philippine Investment Management Consultants, Inc. (PHINMA). He worked there for six years.

In 1976, he moved to Hong Kong. He worked at an investment bank called Bancom International. This job helped him learn a lot about international finance. Later, he also worked for American Express in Hong Kong.

Starting First Pacific and Metro Pacific

In 1981, Manny Pangilinan helped start First Pacific in Hong Kong. He created it with Indonesian businessmen Sudono Salim and his son, Anthoni. In 1987, MVP started Metro Pacific. This company became First Pacific's main investment group in the Philippines.

As the chairman of Metro Pacific, MVP has helped develop the country. His company has invested in important services like electricity (Meralco), water (Maynilad Water Services), and toll roads. They have also improved hospitals and health services, like the Makati Medical Center. He is also the chairman of TV5 and Philex Mining Corporation.

Leading PLDT

In 1998, First Pacific bought PLDT. This is the biggest telecommunications company in the Philippines. When First Pacific took over, PLDT had many problems with debt and old technology. Under MVP's leadership, the company greatly improved. It became the top provider of digital communication services in the country.

Manny Pangilinan's Support for Sports

Manny Pangilinan is a huge supporter of Philippine sports. His family always loved basketball. His mother was a big fan of the San Beda Red Lions basketball team. His father played basketball, baseball, and tennis. Manny himself enjoys playing badminton.

MVP owns three teams in the PBA: the TNT KaTropa, the Meralco Bolts, and the NLEX Road Warriors. He also started the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). This is the national sports group for basketball in the Philippines. He was its first president for two terms, from 2007 to 2016. He is now the chairman emeritus of SBP. He was also part of the FIBA Central Board, which is the main board for international basketball, from 2014 until August 2023.

Through his MVP Sports Foundation, Manny Pangilinan has helped many Filipino athletes. Some of these athletes even won gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games. The foundation supports sports like badminton, boxing, golf, and taekwondo.

  • PHI Order of Lakandula Commander BAR.svg: He received the Order of Lakandula, with the rank of Commander, on May 24, 2006.
