Manoora is a small town, or settlement, located in the Mid North region of South Australia. You can find it along the Barrier Highway and near the top part of the Gilbert River. In 2006, about 277 people lived in Manoora.
Manoora's Railway History
Manoora once played an important role in South Australia's railway system. In February 1870, a railway line from Roseworthy ended temporarily here. This line was built with a wide track, known as "broad-gauge."
Later, in the 1880s, the railway line was made longer. It stretched even further to the towns of Terowie and Peterborough. This helped connect more places for travel and trade.
Regular passenger trains stopped running to Manoora in 1986. The railway line was officially closed down in March 2004.
Early European Settlers
The first Europeans to settle in Manoora arrived around 1841. They were two sheep farmers named Edward and William Peter. They came from Scotland.
The Peter brothers set up their main farm near where Manoora is today. For several years, they had large areas of land where their sheep could graze. This land reached towards the Kapunda and Burra areas.
What's in a Name?
Manoora gets its name from another early farm in the area. This farm was owned by A. W. J. Grant.
It is believed that the name "Manoora" comes from an Aboriginal word. This word likely described a spring or a place with water.
