Saddleworth is a small town located in the Mid North region of South Australia. It sits right on the Gilbert River. Saddleworth is part of an area known as the Gilbert Valley. This valley also includes nearby towns like Riverton, Rhynie, and Tarlee. The main road, called the Barrier Highway, goes right through the town. In 2016, about 470 people lived in Saddleworth.

History of Saddleworth

Saddleworth was first created as a stop on the road to Burra. Burra was an important mining town back then. The town got its name from a local farm called Saddleworth Lodge. This farm was named after a place in Yorkshire, England.

How Saddleworth Got Its Name

The name "Saddleworth" comes from a civil parish in England. This English parish is near the Pennine mountains. Joseph Dunn was the first person to get a license to open a new Saddleworth Lodge. This happened in March 1846.

A railway line, called the Burra railway line, used to pass through Saddleworth. This railway was active from 1870 until the early 2000s. It helped connect the town to other places.
