Manuel Ayerdi Olaizola (born January 13, 1967) is a politician and economist from the Basque Country in Spain. He has held important positions in the government of Navarre, a region in northern Spain. He served as the Minister of Economic Development and Business for Navarre and was also the First Vice President of Navarre. He is a member of the Parliament of Navarre.
Early Life and Education
Manuel Ayerdi was born on January 13, 1967, in San Sebastián, a city in the Basque Country, Spain. He studied at the University of Deusto in San Sebastián. In 1989, he earned a degree in economics and business administration. Later, in 1996, he completed a special course in financial management for small and medium-sized businesses.
His Work as a Politician
Ayerdi started his career in the business world. In 1989, he worked in the marketing department of a technology company called Ibermática. From 1991 to 2001, he was the economic and financial director for a construction company named Alcer. He also managed quality and environmental systems there. Between 2001 and 2012, he was a director at Arian, another company, and represented them in China for several years.
In the 1990s, Ayerdi also taught at the University of Deusto. He taught about how to manage human resources in the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences.
Ayerdi became involved in politics with the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ) in 2003. He was a leader in the party's Navarre branch from 2008 to 2012. From 2012 to 2015, he was the president of this branch.
He was first elected to the Parliament of Navarre in 2011 as part of the Nafarroa Bai group. He was re-elected in 2015 as a candidate for Geroa Bai.
In July 2015, he was chosen to be the First Vice President of Navarre. He also became the Minister of Economic Development under President Uxue Barkos. He left his seat in parliament on July 27, 2015, to focus on his new roles. As a minister, he led several public companies, including Sodena, Cener, and Naitec.
Ayerdi was re-elected to the Parliament of Navarre in 2019. In August 2019, he was appointed Minister of Economic Development and Business by President María Chivite. He served in this role until February 2021.
