Manuel's Tavern is a famous and old restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. It is located in the Poncey–Highland area of the city. Manuel Maloof started this special place in 1956.

It became well-known as a meeting spot for important people. Many members of the Democratic Party would gather there. In 2020, Manuel's Tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

The Story of Manuel's Tavern

How It All Began

Manuel's Tavern first opened its doors in 1956. It was founded by a man named Manuel Maloof. The building where the tavern is located is even older. It was built around 1922.

Manuel Maloof wanted his tavern to be a place for people to talk and share ideas. Because of this, he decided not to have live music or jukeboxes. He wanted conversations to be the main focus.

A Place for Politics

Manuel's Tavern quickly became a favorite spot for politicians. Many members of the Democratic Party would meet there. It was a place where important decisions were discussed.

In 1970, Jimmy Carter chose the tavern to announce his campaign. He was running to become the governor of Georgia. Years later, in 2015, President Barack Obama visited the tavern. He even played a game of darts while he was there. Manuel Maloof himself was very active in politics. He was elected to the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners in 1974.

Changes and Growth Over Time

In the 1980s, two more Manuel's Tavern locations opened. One was on Memorial Drive and another near Norcross, Georgia. However, these new locations did not stay open for long.

In 1984, the tavern hosted a play called As You Like It. This event was very important. It led to the creation of the Shakespeare Tavern. This is now a well-known theater group in Atlanta.

Renovations and New Plans

In 2015, Manuel Maloof's son, Brian Maloof, sold the tavern to developers. The tavern then closed in December of that year for big renovations. It reopened in July the next year, looking fresh but keeping its classic feel.

In 2017, Manuel's grandson announced plans for a new restaurant. It would be a spin-off called Manny's Grant Park Pub. It was planned for Grant Park. On May 29, 2020, Manuel's Tavern officially became a part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Facing Challenges

In November 2020, the tavern faced some financial difficulties. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Manuel Maloof announced that the tavern might have to close.

To help save the tavern, a special fundraising campaign was started. It was set up online with a goal to raise $75,000. People responded very quickly. The goal was met in less than 24 hours. Within a few days, over $180,000 was raised to help keep the historic tavern open.
