Manuel Chaves González was born on July 7, 1945. He is a Spanish politician who held important roles in the Spanish government. He was the Third Deputy Prime Minister of Spain from 2009 to 2011. Later, he served as the Second Deputy Prime Minister in 2011.

Manuel Chaves is a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). He was the Chairman of this party from 2000 to 2012. For many years, from 1990 to 2009, he was the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia. This is a very important leadership position in that part of Spain.

Early Political Career

Manuel Chaves began his journey in national politics in 1977. He was chosen to represent Cádiz in the Spanish Congress of Deputies. This is like being a member of parliament. He served in this role until 1990.

Minister in the Spanish Government

From 1986 to 1990, Manuel Chaves was a minister in the Spanish government. He served as the Minister of Work and National Health Service. This means he was in charge of important areas like jobs and healthcare for the country. He worked under Prime Minister Felipe González during this time.

Leading Andalusia

In 1990, Manuel Chaves became the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia. This made him the leader of one of Spain's large regions. He was seen as one of the key leaders within his political party, the PSOE.

After his party lost the general election in 2000, Manuel Chaves took on a new role. He helped organize the 35th Congress of the PSOE. This meeting was important because it chose José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero as the new General Secretary of the party.

Deputy Prime Minister of Spain

In April 2009, Prime Minister Zapatero asked Manuel Chaves to join his government. He became the Third Deputy Prime Minister and also the Minister of Territorial Policy. This role involved managing how different parts of Spain worked together with the central government.

In July 2011, he was promoted to Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain. He continued in this high-ranking position until December 2011. After this, he left his government roles.
