Manuel Ortiz de Zárate Pinto (born October 9, 1887 – died October 28, 1946) was a Chilean painter. He was born in Italy but grew up in Chile. He painted from 1902 to 1945. He worked mostly in Paris, France, and in Italy.

About Manuel Ortiz de Zárate

Manuel Ortiz de Zárate was born in Como, Italy. His full name was Manuel Revuelta Ortiz de Zárate Pinto. His father, Eleodoro Ortiz de Zárate, was a composer. His mother was Matilde Pinto Benavente. Manuel's older brother, Julio, was also a painter. His grandfather, Aníbal Pinto, was once the President of Chile.

When Manuel was four years old, his family moved back to Chile. He began studying painting with Pedro Lira. Later, he joined the Escuela de Bellas Artes (Academy of Fine Arts) in Santiago.

Moving to Europe

When he was 15, Manuel ran away from home. He secretly boarded a ship heading to Italy. He studied painting in Rome for a while. Then, he moved to Paris, which was a very exciting place for artists.

In Paris, he joined a group of artists in the Montparnasse Quarter. He became friends with famous painters like Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and Léonard Foujita. These artists would become very important in the art world.

His Art Style

Manuel Ortiz de Zárate studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He developed his skills in modernist painting. He often painted still lifes, which are pictures of objects, and landscapes, which are pictures of nature.

In 1916, he became an art assistant to Pablo Picasso. From 1920 to 1940, Ortiz de Zárate showed his paintings at the Salon d'Automne. This was a big art show held every year in Paris.

Manuel Ortiz de Zárate also helped start the Grupo Montparnasse. He created this group with other Chilean artists, including Camilo Mori.

Later Life

During World War II, Manuel Ortiz de Zárate stayed in France. This was even when German forces occupied the country. After the war ended, he traveled to the United States. He passed away in 1946 in Los Angeles, California.

Manuel's daughter, Laure Ortiz de Zárate, became a costume designer. She was married to the American abstract painter John Ferren. Later, she married the production designer Eugène Lourié.
