Manuel Scorza (born September 9, 1928, died November 27, 1983) was a famous writer from Peru. He wrote exciting novels and poems. Scorza was also a political activist. This means he worked to change things he thought were unfair in his country. Because of his political ideas, he had to leave Peru for a while.

Scorza's Early Life and Activism
Manuel Scorza was born in Lima, the capital city of Peru. As a young man, he joined a student group called "The Poets of the People" (in Spanish, Los Poetas Del Pueblo). This group was connected to a political party in Peru. They used their writing to share their ideas and try to make a difference.
A Voice for Change
Scorza became a well-known political activist. He spoke out against the government of Manuel Odría, who was the president of Peru at the time. Because of his strong opinions and actions, Scorza was forced to leave his home country. He lived in exile, meaning he had to live outside Peru for a period.
The Silent War Novels
Manuel Scorza is most famous for a series of five novels. These books are known together as "The Silent War." They tell important stories about the struggles of people in Peru.

Manuel Scorza's Death
Manuel Scorza died on November 27, 1983. He was traveling on a plane called Avianca Flight 011. The plane crashed as it was trying to land at Madrid's Barajas Airport in Spain.
Tragic Accident
The plane hit some hills during its approach to the airport. Sadly, 181 people died in this accident. Other famous writers were also on the plane, including Jorge Ibargüengoitia from Mexico and Ángel Rama from Uruguay.
