Manuel Tomás Thomson Porto Mariño (born November 3, 1839 – died February 27, 1880) was a brave Chilean naval officer. He was a frigate captain in the Chilean Navy. He is remembered for his important role and his death during the War of the Pacific.

Who Was Manuel Thomson?

Manuel Thomson was born in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1839. He joined the Chilean Navy in 1851 when he was just 12 years old. He quickly became a skilled sailor and leader. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a frigate captain.

Early Naval Service

Before the War of the Pacific, Manuel Thomson took part in other important events. One of these was the Chincha Islands War (1864–1866). This conflict involved Spain and a group of South American countries, including Chile. Thomson gained valuable experience during these early years.

The War of the Pacific

The War of the Pacific (1879–1884) was a major conflict in South America. It was fought between Chile and the combined forces of Peru and Bolivia. This war was mainly about control over valuable mineral-rich lands. Manuel Thomson played a key part in the naval battles of this war.

Taking Command of the Huáscar

One of the most famous ships of the War of the Pacific was the ironclad vessel Huáscar. This ship originally belonged to Peru. However, after a fierce fight known as the Battle of Angamos in October 1879, the Chilean Navy captured the Huáscar.

After its capture, Manuel Thomson was given the important job of commanding the Huáscar. This was a big responsibility, as the ship was very powerful and well-known.

The Naval Battle of Arica

In early 1880, Thomson took the Huáscar to the city of Arica, which was then part of Peru. His mission was to bombard the city and stop supplies from reaching it. This action led to a naval battle known as the Naval Battle of Arica.

During this battle, the Huáscar faced off against the Peruvian monitor Manco Cápac. A monitor was a type of warship with heavy armor and powerful guns. The two ships exchanged fire in a fierce duel.

Thomson's Death

Tragically, during the Naval Battle of Arica on February 27, 1880, Manuel Thomson was killed. He died while bravely leading his ship in battle. His death was a great loss for the Chilean Navy.

Manuel Thomson's Legacy

Manuel Thomson is remembered as a hero in Chile. He is honored for his bravery and his service to his country. To recognize his contributions, a Chilean submarine, the Thomson (SS-20), was named after him.
